Make Sure You Get The Right Program For You

Apr 18, 2008
Sometimes the urge comes on a girl to get out there and get in shape. But when that happens, the reasons women put themselves through the work of working out are always different from why men do it. But if your motivations for working out are combined with a well designed work out program, you will stick with the program long enough to see results. And when you go into a program knowing exactly what you want, you will know when it's working and when it isn't and make the proper adjustments rather than just give up.

Very often when exercise programs are customized for men, there is a strong preference for strength training and weight lifting. Men get a powerful rush of endorphins from that kind of exercise and it ties in well with a natural urge to "bulk out" that is a big part of the male psyche.

So it's natural that women's exercise programs are focused on other motivations for getting in shape. And if you ask all the women at the gym what is the big motivation, it usually is the desire to lose a few pounds. That is why a woman's workout must include a mixture of exercises which includes some cardio work outs combined with weight room exercises that are specifically focused on stretching and toning the tummy.

There is no getting around it though, for an effective weight loss program, we are going to have to work up a sweat with cardio exercises like tennis, swimming, running and brisk walking. But we must always seek a healthy balance of exercise so we can see some real progress.

Any weight loss program that is going to work combines all of the factors of good diet control, cardio exercises, thorough stretching and some weight exercises so that you build muscle as the fat melts away. But even if your program is perfectly tuned to your goals and your body type, that is not enough to make you a success in your exercise program. To do that you have to find the motivation to stick with it over a period of weeks and months so we have to make sure exercise is fun, or at least something to look forward to if we ever expect to succeed.

For anyone to want to stay with an exercise program, the activities you do during your work out must be "fun" and social and this is certainly true of programs designed for women. Because we are such social creatures, you will do better if you can enjoy our workout time with a girlfriend or at an all woman's gym where you can relax and focus on your exercise. And if you add a good variety to what you do each day, that helps tremendously with being able to stick with your program long enough to see real results.

So you might alternate between swimming, a team sport like volleyball or tennis, jogging and other fun activities to keep each work out period fun and interesting. Similarly your trainer can help you develop a variety of weight training workouts using a variety of machines each that has a different focus so even your time "on the machines" doesn't get too repetitive.

And the payback on the thought and good design you put on your work out program is that you will stick with it and being healthy will become more than just a program for a few short months but a new way of life that will lead to long term fitness. And that is an excellent outcome of any program to make you a healthier woman.
