Basic Obstructive Sleep Apnea Remedies

In truth, there aren't a lot of easy obstructive sleep apnea remedies. This condition is very dangerous and can be difficult to treat, however, you can still address it at its source and take steps to remedy if not correct it.

For one, losing weight may be the most difficult and unpleasant of all suggested obstructive sleep apnea remedies there are, but it's also one of the most important. If you are overweight to the point of developing sleep apnea, then you are probably experiencing other problems from your weight whether you want to admit it or not. Excessive body weight can cause diabetes, heart disease, acid reflux disease, arthritis and permanent joint damage, is linked to certain forms of cancer, and wreaks havoc with your blood sugar and circulatory health. Of all the obstructive sleep apnea remedies there are, losing weight may be the one that has the most benefit to your system and your health overall! So while it's difficult and maybe even downright unpleasant, it can be beneficial not just for your sleep but for your entire system.

Other obstructive sleep apnea remedies involve keeping your mouth and throat moist throughout the night so that you are better able to breathe. This won't stop your sleep apnea completely as you may still find your airway somewhat blocked by excessive tissue, but if you can keep your mouth and throat moist, air is better able to pass through these areas. Try using a humidifier or warm mist vaporizer in your bedroom. Use some menthol or eucalyptus oil in the vaporizer to keep your air passages clear. This will help to unclog your sinuses so that you can breathe easily through your nose or mouth. These obstructive sleep apnea remedies also work for chronic snoring, so if you have a problem in this area as well, you may find some relief.

Another way to potentially help obstructive sleep apnea is to raise yourself up in bed. Try some books or something under your mattress at the top or you could prop yourself up with some firm pillows. Don't drink alcohol before you go to bed as this will make your muscles collapse all the more as alcohol will relax them and so exacerbate the problem.

Undoubtedly it's always a good idea to speak to your doctor about any obstructive sleep apnea remedies that he or she would suggest so that you can rest assured that you're dealing with the problem in the most effective way possible.
