6 Ways to Talk To Your Kids About Drugs

By Bill Havens
Apr 22, 2008
How do we become good parents? Basically by trial and error which is a very poor way to accomplish this.

I have worked in the world of drug prevention and awareness. Since 1979, after teaching for 20 years, I entered my second career. I became a professional speaker in the fields of motivation, drug prevention and awareness. During that time I conducted over 3000 programs on drug prevention and motivation in the schools.

Talking about effect of drugs is a lot harder than it used to be. The influence you have as a parent is important to your child's life. It takes constant involvement with your kids.

We live in a different world than when we grew up. We didn't know that much about drugs. Today's kids know more than their parents about drugs and over the counter medicines.

I included this short article on drugs which should help the parents talk to their kids about drugs. Talking to your kids about drugs can help them to remain drug free.

Talking to your kids about drugs isn't a formal, one-time-only conversation. You can steer conversational topics to why drugs are harmful or use everyday events to start a conversation about them.

Here are some suggestions that will be helpful:

If you and your child see a group of kids drinking or smoking, use the moment to talk about the negative effects of alcohol and tobacco.

One of the best ways to keep your kids' drug free is to show them you care. Reinforce your love - say the words I love you.

This is not the time to criticize - you can find a better way.

Remember that children often reflect what they have or have not been taught.

Teach the principles of "why," not just "what" to do or not to do.

Your listening skills will, if they avoid interrupting will build up your kids self image.

How to be a terrific parent:

The behavior of parents is more important in helping students resist the use of alcohol and other drugs than learning to resist peer pressure. This is very important!

What you are speaks so loudly I can't hear what you say! In other words parents, be the model yourself. It starts when the mother is doing drugs while she is pregnant.

Let's put this principle into effect and influence your children in a positive way. It doesn't matter what you say about the danger of drugs but by the behavior exhibited by the parents. Let me share with you what I mean: You come home from work and you have a headache. You complain in front of your children and take some aspirin. What message are you sending to your children? When you don't feel good just take a pill.

There is nothing wrong with taking aspirin for a head ache. Just go to the privacy of your bathroom.

If dad wants a beer, just don't drink it in front of the kids.

We have been programmed either positively or negatively all of our lives. The attitudes we now have are nothing more than habits of thought. Much of this advertising is done by you parents.

William James, a Harvard psychologist said that you can change your life by changing your attitudes of mind.

Influence your kids in a positive way by giving compliments and expressing your love for them.
