Almost all addicted persons believe at the start that they are capable of stopping their drugs usage thru their own efforts, without treatment.

Nonetheless, most attempts fail to accomplish long-term or lasting abstinence because of the fact that studies show that continuing drug use produces substantial brain function changes that persist even after you stop using drugs.

Because of this, major biological effect that an individual addicted to drugs struggles and has difficultly in attaining and continuing drug abstinence with no treatment.

Treatment for drug addiction

There are various kinds of addictive drugs as well as treatments for particular types of drugs vary and treatment likewise varies subject to the patients characteristics.

Choosing addiction treatment programs

Treatment methods for drug addiction

1. 12 step

This method basically require person to attend social encounter with other individuals undergoing the same problem, wherein the 12 steps are used or put into action.
The 12 steps are taken from the Big Book and assumed that by performing the steps, an addict can be cleansed this way.

2. Long term

This method involves an addict going for a vacation to a camp or residential style setting.

The theory with this method is that a longer time that the person is away, the person has greater chances of staying drug-free.

TC or therapeutic community is the most popular type of residential treatment with planned staying period of up to 12 months and also include cognitive-behavioral therapy.

TCs concentrate on the reconciliation with the individuals inner person and socialization with other addicts and employ the entire programs community including the staff and the whole social environment, as active elements of treatment.

3. Medical detoxification

This process entails that drug addicts are withdrawn systematically from drugs in either an outpatient or inpatient setting, normally under a physicians care who uses medication unto patients.

Detoxification is known as an antecedent of treatment since it is intended and planned to remedy the severe physiological outcome of discontinuing drug use.

Because detoxification does not address the social, behavioral and psychological problems connected with drug addiction, it therefore usually does not produce permanent behavioral changes needed for recovery.

Detoxification is recommended to be used along with other methods of treatment to be most effective and successful.

4. Bio physical and social educational

Using drugs leaves behind a residue in the bone marrow and fat tissue and the bodys recovery from these drug residues can take about 5 years.

Side effects include depression, anxiety and cravings. And individuals trying to withdraw from drugs suffering from depression, anxiety or cravings often will use drugs again.
