Common Mistakes Beginners Make In Poker

Apr 24, 2008
Beginners to poker will commonly make mistake after mistake- this is unavoidable. Until they get enough experience and play in the field, there isn't a whole lot that can be done to teach them the intricacies of poker. However, there are a few tips and guidelines all beginners should be made aware of before beginning their poker career- as it could potentially save them thousands.

The biggest mistake most beginners engage in is superstition. Poker is a game of luck- nothing more, nothing less. There is no use in dabbling in good luck charms, praying, or performing ritualistic actions in order to create better odds for one's self. This often leads to pride and impulsive behavior- two traits that can quickly lose a lot of money for poker players.

A big rule in poker is to never lose one's composure. It's best to remain as indifferent and unreadable as possible throughout the game. This is because opponents may try to read your personality, and thus predict your moves. In this sense, it's best to never get too emotional over a loss or a success in order to prevent such personality readings from occurring.

Professional poker players can attest that they will play less hands on average than the beginner does. Very simply, the beginner has a tough time figuring out when to fold and when to try and depend on luck for a good hand. This knowledge usually comes with experience, but beginners should always try to fold on poor hands and only depend on luck where absolutely needed.

The excitement of poker will often get the best of a beginning poker player. Because poker often requires real money to play, this is an excellent way for poker players to go broke within hours. To prevent gambling addiction or gambling problems, it is recommended that beginners keep a strict budget when playing poker- and never break it for any reason.

As previously mentioned, it is very important for the theory on odds to be studied upon. One sure example of reading odds well is through the flush or royal flush. When a beginner gets a few cards of the same suit, they will commonly hope for a flush and continue betting. But the real odds of getting a flush even with admirable cards is slim- which serves as a prime example of how odds can change one's success ratio dramatically.

Closing Comments On Poker

Beginners should note that poker will take a long time to get the hang of. Never should a poker player expect to start making a full income on poker within a few weeks. Indeed, it usually takes months or years for one to get a full grasp on the game- and even then, it all comes down to luck of the draw as to who wins. Be sure to keep the tips and guidelines in mind wherever possible, as it could potentially save beginners thousands in trying to learn the complex game of poker.
