What Your Doctor Should Know about Depression

Apr 24, 2008
If there were a prize for "Most Damaging and Dangerous" of all mental disorders, depression would be the stand out winner. It's not just that depression affects so many people (some experts estimate around 50%, and for elderly men, over 95%), and that depression is the leading cause of suicide. It's not even that when someone in your home has depression, EVERYBODY suffers.

I'm sure you can see why depression would be considered so dangerous, but there's something that makes it even more rotten, and that's the very rapid increase in rates of depression world wide.

No-one is disputing the horrendous rates of increase, and all experts accept the opinion of the World Health Organisation that in a mere 12 years, depression will be the most costly disease on the planet. At the moment it's heart and vascular disease, but depression is set to overtake even those!

Of course it stands to reason that every Health Department in the world would like to turn those rates around.

The big problem is that research and development of treatment for depression is being driven by, you guessed it, the big drug companies. And the best answer they've been able to come up with so far is the class of drugs known as the SSRI's (serotonin selective re-uptake inhibitors) that work by keeping your serotonin active in your brain for longer before being "reabsorbed".

The SSRI's have been around long enough now for us to have seen some very serious side effects, not just while people are taking them, but especially when they try to stop them! Maybe we could tolerate that if they worked, but the evidence is that they're no more effective than sugar pills. This is why you shouldn't be surprised if your doctor is wary about handing out that prescription!

That's a great question! I'm not saying all drugs are useless for depression, because in rare cases there are certain drugs that sure can be helpful, but it's not the SSRI's! The good news is that a newly-developed Australian treatment for depression, backed by a boatload of excellent research around the world, has proven to provide very fast, and very easy relief for this awful disorder.

And that approach is twofold: first do a thorough check of lifestyle (including nutrition, activity, work, home and relationships), and secondly, teach the patient incredibly simple techniques to quickly and permanently "shut down" depression activity in the brain.

Because this is an article and not a book, there's not room to detail everything right here. Instead I'd like to direct you to some excellent free resources that help you deal very comprehensively with the crucial lifestyle factors, and also give you an opportunity to try out BMSA for yourself and see how effective it is at quickly giving you relief from troubling thoughts and feelings.

These books are "17 Solutions" (detailing the crucial lifestyle factors) and "Stop Wishing and Start GETTING!" which is both an argument against "The Secret" and a demonstration of how easy it can be to achieve positive change when you use a proven scientific approach instead of superstitious thinking, or indeed, out-dated and disproven therapy approaches!

You actually need to be a member of TopLifeSolutions.com to grab these free books, but that's OK because membership is free also. Along with the free video support and a host of other things all designed to help people move toward better health and more satisfaction with their lives.

For medical practitioners and mental health professionals, more information including research papers is available on www.bmsa-int.com, a site which provides up-to-date information and support for clinicians interested in integrating more efficacious therapy practice.
