Apr 25, 2008
Have you heard about herbs for arthritis? Although there is no natural or synthetic cure for arthritis, there are ways and means to help reduce the pain and swelling caused by arthritis. One way is to take some helpful herbs. Here are some of the possible herbs you may want to take.

-Stinging Nettle- This herb has a similar effect as NSAIDs. It reduces inflammation since it has anti inflammatory properties. It also contains boron which is a mineral which is especially recommended for arthritis patients. Nettle leaves can be steamed and eaten to relieve arthritis inflammation.

-Devil's Claw- The unique name of this herb is taken from its fruit. As the herb's name implies, its fruits are shaped like claws. This African herb can reduce inflammation and provide relief from pain. Some herbal experts also say that taking this herb can help improve joint flexibility.

-Ginger- This common herb is also good relief for inflammation and pain. The best thing about it is that it apparently has no side effects. Ginger is easily available and can be drunk as tea or eaten mixed with food or dish sauce.

-Celery- Another ingredient found in the kitchen that can be used for arthritis relief is celery. Early European settlers introduced this herb to the North American continent. The herb has anti-inflammatory substances and potassium which is beneficial for arthritis patients.

-Red Pepper- It is common knowledge that red pepper has pain relieving properties. It is therefore considered one of the best herbs for arthritis. As some would already know, it is the capsaicin in red pepper that interferes with how people perceive pain. The substance also causes the generation and release of more endorphins. One other beneficial substance in red pepper is salicylate. Aspirin contains this substance.

-Alfalfa- Arthritis patients receive vitamin and mineral nourishment from alfalfa. This herb is also a diuretic. Alfalfa in tea form is a good supplement for arthritis patients. It is advisable though for arthritis sufferers not to take it in its powder form since it can worsen the symptoms of the condition.

-Angelica- This is another species for what is also known as dong quai. For centuries, this herb has been taken as a form of tea to help relieve swelling and pain.

A couple of other herbs have pain and inflammation reducing components. Those who take herbs seriously and properly can truly attest to the effectiveness of herbs. You should always remember though to always have safety in mind. Some herbs, when taken with some medicines can result in serious and dangerous side effects.

Herbs also have no standard dosages and mixtures. Different sources and herbal experts will have different recommendations. This means there is no guarantee that one specific dosage recommendation will work well for you.

If you truly wan to take herbs for arthritis, then consult your doctor. He could give you some advice on which herbs are safe to take considering your condition and current medications.
