Tips for Keeping Down the Cost of Your Child's Dental Bills

Apr 26, 2008
It's important to have healthy teeth, and if you're a parent, you should make sure that your child receives dental care right away. Cavities and other dental issues can be easily avoided if they are taken care of right away. If you choose to ignore your child's dental health, this could mean enormous dental bills when you can no longer ignore their dental problems.

Start Your Child Early

Take your child to the dentist for regular dental check ups as soon as he turns two. There are pediatric dentists who specialize in taking care of small children's dental needs. These dentist have dental equipment that are the appropriate size for their small patients. And usually, they would have things in their clinics such as stickers and coloring books that serve as distractions to small children as the dentist checks their teeth. If your child is still too young to take to the dentist, the responsibility of taking care of his teeth starts with you. If there aren't any teeth showing yet, you can clean your child's gums with a wet soft cloth. As soon as you see two teeth touch each other, you can start brushing your child's teeth. Use a toothbrush with very soft bristles. Don't use fluoride toothpaste; use toothpaste that's specially formulated for toddlers. Only use a tiny amount of toothpaste in every brushing.

When you put your child to bed at night, avoid giving him a bottle of milk. Your child can sleep without sucking on a bottle. Besides, frequent and needless sucking can only cause buck teeth. In addition, your child's mouth becomes the perfect breeding ground for cavity-causing bacteria if you let him sleep sucking on a milk bottle all night. This will eventually cause your child to have toothaches.

Frequent Visits to the Dentist

Begin taking your child to the dentist even when he doesn't have any dental problems yet. If you do this, you help your child believe his visits to the dentist are pleasant experiences. If you take your child to the dentist for the first time and it's to have his cavities filled or his teeth pulled, your child will fear going to the dentist. He will always associate those trips with pain and discomfort.

Watch What Your Child Consumes

You don't have to be a genius to know that candy isn't good for the teeth. According to recent studies, however, the frequency of eating candies, not how much of them you eat, is the main cause of many dental problems. So at Halloween for example, your child's teeth would be better off if you let them eat their candies in one go instead of piece by piece every day. Don't take this to mean that it's OK for your child to eat a bag of candies in one sitting, however. You should also teach your child to brush his teeth after he eats candies or anything sweet.

Then there are the juice drinks, which have been found to cause a lot of dental problems. While juice drinks are preferable to sodas, make sure that your child does not drink more than 6 ounces of 100% fruit juice each day. If your child is still bottle fed, avoid giving him juice in a bottle. You can teach him to drink his juice from a cup or to use a straw.
