Learn How to Keep Your Car From Killing Your Cash Supply

Apr 27, 2008
Do you have a vehicle? You probably do. Believe it or not, you probably waste a lot more money on your car than you realize every month. Here are a few things that you should avoid.

One of the biggest ways that people waste money on their vehicles is by purchasing premium gasoline instead of the lower grade stuff. There is no real difference in performance, unless your vehicle manufacturer specifically tells you in your owner's manual to purchase a certain grade of gasoline. If you do not have to purchase premium to keep from ruining the engine, buy the cheap stuff.

Depending on where you live and how often you drive your car, you should change your oil between every 5,000 or 7,500 miles. If you do not drive very often, you should probably go by the calendar instead and change your oil every 6 months, at least.

A good thing that you can do to prevent spending extra money concerning a worn part is to replace it before it gives out. This means to make sure you replace that old worn tire before it goes flat or get a new timing belt before it snaps in half.

If you have to have something major done to your vehicle, though, you should try to avoid using a dealer for this at all costs. Call around and find out how much it will cost you to have the repairs done, but keep in mind that you will want quality work at well. Take an offer somewhere in the middle.

Take the time to learn how to replace your air filter and your wiper blades on your own than have a mechanic do it for you. You should replace your air filter more often depending on how dusty the climate you are in is. If you live in the desert, you should probably do this as you do every other oil change; for other vehicles, about every 20,000 miles or less should be good. Getting new wipers once a year will help save your windshield.

You should change your antifreeze only when the hydrometer says that it will not withstand the coldest weather that your local area receives every winter. Changing it about every two years is a good schedule, but you should also try to keep the cooling system in your vehicle working properly by running it every couple of weeks. This makes sure that it stays lubricated.
