Labia Reduction Surgery

A labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that is designed to adjust the size and shape of a woman's labial area through paring back an area that is thought to be too fleshy. The vaginal and labial areas can often be places that are very problematic for women, and given the fact that the appearance of the labia themselves are usually beyond a woman's control, this can add to the stress.

Childbirth, intercourse and aging can all contribute to changes in the appearance of a woman's labia minora and labia majora. A labia which is seen as being too large, or noticeably asymmetrical can lead a woman to opt for this procedure. Overly large labia can also lead to infections and swelling from routine abrasion, as well as causing self-consciousness and discomfort.

This type of plastic surgery is considered appropriate for women who have finished developing physically and who are in good health. Some people who have certain medical conditions may not be good candidates for this surgery, but as always, it is important to speak to a certified plastic surgeon before any decisions are made. At this point in time, there are only a small number of plastic surgeons who will perform this surgery.

Labiaplasty is not really all that difficult of a surgery, however this does depend on the end result the patient wants. The length and difficulty of the procedure depends on whether the outer lips (labia majora), inner lips (labia minora), or both are to be altered. The surgery normally takes in the neighborhood of two hours and can be done under local anesthetic as an outpatient procedure.

After the surgery, the area surrounding the incisions might be a little bit bruised, and there will be some swelling that will go away in a matter of weeks. Painkillers are often prescribed to reduce the pain, while antibiotics are given to reduce the risk of infection. If you are given antibiotics, remember to eat plenty of yogurt to ensure a good balance of bacteria in your body. Similarly, you'll be given a list of instructions that will show you what restrictions you have to remember to make sure that the procedure heals properly.

A labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that has changed many lives. If it is a procedure that interests with you, speak with a board-certified plastic surgeon and find out what it can do for you.
