Small Bathroom Ideas-Maximize Your Space

Apr 29, 2008
Small bathroom ideas for a bathroom remodeling project make take some time to assemble, but it can make your small bathroom more pleasant and more functional as well.

Consider first what you want and need when first beginning to plan for bathroom remodeling. Small bathroom design requires strategic planning.

Are you going to do a complete remodel of the entire space, or do you just want to do a partial bathroom remodel? A partial remodel can sometime bring great results.

Changes you want to make in your bathroom will depend on how it is used, and who uses it. Your small bathroom design will vary depending on if it is a main bathroom, or a master bath. Each has it's own needs.

A main bath may have to serve the needs of various age groups. If it is the only bath, it will serve the whole family as well as guests. If there are young children in the household, that needs to be taken into consideration.

While you want a a main bathroom to function well and be attractive, you may want to give a master bath a real touch of luxury by adding special materials not suited for heavy traffic, or amenities better suited for a couple such as a two person soaking bathtub

When selecting color choices for your bathroom walls, floor and surfaces, stay with the lighter tones. Lighter colors will brighten the room and add visual space.

Choose light tones for your wall color, and a coordinating light color for your flooring. Larger more muted patterns are better for your flooring than small busy patterns. The less the better.

A glass shower door rather than a shower curtain adds visual space. A sliding door on a shower consumes less real space than one that swing out into the room.

The natural light from a window will brighten up a small space and make it feel less cramped. Keep window treatment simple. Use a less-full valance to give it a finished look. A mini-blind or bamboo shade can be used underneath for privacy.

Light colored cabinetry that coordinates with wall color will continue the effort to stretch visual space. Cabinetry should be simple design and covered in front to conceal items that are stored. Existing cabinetry can be sanded and stained a lighter wood tone or even a color. This will reclaim what you already have and give it a new appearance.

Replace towel rods with rings. Rings are more elegant, and fit closer to the wall. Think how much wall space a standard towel bar consumes.

Consider, if you are replacing fixtures, getting smaller more compact versions. Many fixtures are planned and manufactured with small bathroom design in mind.

The shape of your bathroom may make another small bathroom idea useful. Corner fixtures can sometimes be a better fit for your space and it's shape. There are tubs, pedestal sinks, and even toilets designed for corner applications.

Once your small bathroom design has come together and you have your bath space renovated, keep it tidy. It doesn't take much to make a small space look messy. Keep infrequestly used items in other space such as a linen closet. Dishpans from the dollar store will keep these items organized and easy to mobilize when they are needed.
