Apr 30, 2008
Every get so hyped for a trip that once you arrive at your destination, it can't possibly live up to your expectations? You'll never have this problem with Costa Rica. It is the ultimate "wow" travel destination.

If you like to do different things on your vacations, you are going to love Costa Rica. The most obvious thing to do is enjoy the coasts on both sides of the country. You can pick a beach totally empty or one with a more festive atmosphere.

Ah, but Costa Rica is much more than just beaches. It has world class wind surfing on Lake Arenal, stunning eco-tourism opportunities in protected rain forests and so much more. Oh, and the food is tremendous.

Ah, but now I am just throwing words of hype around. You need some facts, so here are a few on the country.

Costa Rica is odd in the makeup of its population. Unlike all the countries around it, most of its population are decendents from Europeans, particularly Spaniards.

Given the name of the country, you probably will not be surprised to learn the people are known as "Costa Ricans." That is a mouthful, so most of the citizens just call themselves "Ticos"

Costa Rica is not particularly large, covering 19,730 square miles. Of this, over a quarter are protected lands.

The capital city of Costa Rica is San Jose, located in the center of the country.

Costa Rica is unique from all the countries around it in that it has remained a stable country for over a hundred years. There was one short civil war long ago, but peace has reigned the rest of the time..

The country has a relatively small population at 4 million, but is now growing at 1.5 percent. Roman Catholic is the dominant religion, although a surprising 15 percent claim a Protestant faith.

Travelers to Costa Rica have to be careful with the seasons. There is no winter or summer as such. Instead, there is a rainy season from May to November and a dry season from December to April.

Costa Rica puts Seattle to shame when it comes to rain. 100 inches annually is the number. Mountain areas can get as many as 250 inches. Temperatures always remain in the 70 to 90 degree range.

Hot and humid describes the summer months with rain daily in the afternoon, but temperatures remaining in the 70 to 90 degree range.

There are Seven Provinces in Costa Rica - Alajuela, Cartago, Guanacaste, Heredia, Limn, Puntarenas, and San Jos.

At the end of the day, there are tons of different things you could know about Costa Rica. The most important way to find them out, however, is just to visit the country and take in one of the best travel destinations in the world.
