Party Planning for Dummies

May 3, 2008
Is it just me, or is planning for a party exhausting? Don't get me wrong, I love having family and friends over for meals and celebrations. The party itself is always fun, and after it's over, I'm so glad we took the time to have the gathering. But for the week or two before, my mind is a jumble of lists of shopping, cleaning, cooking, and general planning. Exhausting!

Have you ever noticed that these cooking shows make any endeavor, not matter how complex, look easy? They always pull it off in 30 minutes or less and it's all flawless. A feast fit for a king (or queen). Not only are the meals right out of Gourmet Magazine, they are part of a bigger party theme. It's impressive. But is it really that easy?

I love my home - it's comfy and roomy. But clean? Rarely. And we live on budgets so we don't have a designer decor. Getting the table set with a clean tablecloth is a big event for us. It's a family home and one well lived in. It's not party central.

Sometimes after I think I want to have a party I start to doubt whether I should have the party. The huge amount of work required just to get close to the level of opulent entertaining starts to present itself. And the demands of home and family make me realize that perhaps I was thinking too big.

Of course I eventually snap out of it. I mean when I go to my friends houses for parties its no formal affair and I like that. No one's home is spotless and they, like we, have what could be embarrassing stains on their carpet. There place settings may not all match and, funny, that has no impact on the fun we have.

I realize that these are the very people that I am inviting to my party. They expect, and enjoy, imperfection. Yes, I still drive myself crazy cleaning, cooking, and planning, but I worry far less about copying the television shows. I am so very blessed to have family and friends that like to come to my home for the people, not the perfect party.
