Pisa Car Hire Excursions

May 3, 2008
Once you have experienced the beauty and culture of Pisa, including the must-see Leaning Tower, why not get out and see some of the surrounding Tuscany region? The reasons for touring Italy with a hire car are manifold. Independence is one good reason. Car hire gives you the freedom to explore everything that Tuscany has to offer at a pace that suits you.

Tuscany is an idyllic Italian region, encompassing a multitude of quintessentially Italian delights - delicious Chianti and Montepulciano wines, wonderfully preserved hilltop towns, fabulous cuisine and friendly Italian people, all set against a stunning Italian landscape and azure skies. The region offers a number of superb day trips and excursions to make during your Tuscany holiday - the following are two of the best available from the beautiful Tuscan city of Pisa.

A DAY IN THE CHIANTI

The famous wine region of the Chianti lies between Florence and Siena in the Tuscany region of Italy. Take a wine tasting tour of the region by driving along the Chiantigiana Wine Road and stopping in the quaint winemaking villages along the way (draw straws for the designated driver!). You will reach Greve, which is the principal town of the Chianti region and has a delightful weekly market in the main square. Stop off for lunch in a restaurant or café, or if you are being thrifty or sticking to a budget you could perhaps buy cheap but delicious traditional Italian food in a local shop and have a low cost lunch al fresco.

If you think there are still more wines that you want to taste, then keep going - but if your driver has had enough of ferrying passengers around and wants to drink some wine his/herself, head back towards Pisa with any purchases you have made and enjoy!

SAN GIMIGNANO & SIENA

The enchanting medieval town of San Gimignano lies just over 80km from Pisa, on a hilltop overlooking the surrounding country. The town is notable for its numerous tall towers piercing its skyline, a famous landmark feature in the area and one of Italy's most unusual and fascinating architectural sights. Spend a morning wandering around the old walls of the city, taking photos of the towers, and relishing the peaceful atmosphere and astounding scenery.

From here you can drive to Siena town, the heart of Tuscany. See the town's gorgeous and remarkably well preserved gothic architecture, and be sure to visit the Duomo and Campo - likened to a large concave scallop shell - where the annual Palio (horse race) is held in July and August.

The town's situation on a somewhat y-shaped ridge means that it spreads into bordering valleys and has narrow, steep streets. It also offers superb panoramas of the surrounding Tuscan countryside, including Monte Amiata, the town of Asciano and the area of Montagnola. North is the wine-producing Chianti region. There are many great places to eat in Siena, most offering great value - cheap/low cost menus, generous portions and authentic and delicious Tuscan cuisine - perfect for tourists who want to eat on a budget.
