Myths About Kidney Stones Treatments and Calcium

May 3, 2008
Kidney stones cause some of the most horrendous pain known to man. Whether you are suffering now from kidney stones or searching for information on preventing a reoccurrence. There are different forms of treatment available.

The first therapy you can follow immediately on your own is to monitor the types of food you ingest and the quantity or lack of exercise you practice. The intake of foods that contain oxalates such as almonds, cashews, berries, black tea, soybeans should be reduced to a minimum.

The most common type of kidney stone is caused from calcium oxalate. Recent studies have shown foods high in calcium, including dairy products, may stop calcium stones from forming. Definitely, cut back, on drinking soda and iced tea which are both high in oxalate. Oxalate cannot be burned by our bodies and if not eliminated through urine, it binds to calcium and forms kidney stones.

Treatments for kidney stones are directly related to their dimensions. If the stones are minuscule, drinking large quantities of fluids such as water and fruit juices will hydrate the kidney and the stones will pass through the urinary tract and leave the body through urination. However, if you have not been used to high intakes of water, start gradually and consult your physician before radically increasing consumption of liquids. Drinking too much water weakens the salt in your blood and tissues - and can cause very severe damages.

Treating small kidney stones is normally done by the patient consuming 2-3 quarts of water or other liquid to pass the stone through the urinary tract. One in five cases of recurrent kidney stones is caused by chronic urinary tract infections. Make certain you seek immediate treatment as soon as any symptoms of infection occur. If, you suffer from any other metabolic disorders such as gout, be sure to continue taking your prescribed medications.

Studies show that for 3 out of 10 patients who were lacking Oxalobacter formigenes, natural bacterium in our body suffered more from the formation of kidney stones. This natural bacterium resides in our intestinal tract and combined with antibiotics will prevent the presence of infections in this area that could potentially reactivate the buildup of kidney stones. When stones reach medium size, the pain caused by the blockage of the urinary tract becomes unbearable and water has no effect until they are dissolved.

Treatment for large kidney stones sometimes requires medical procedures. A device called a lithotripter pulverizes the kidney stones with ultrasonic waves. This is a very successful treatment that can be performed as outpatient. You will be allowed to stay awake if you wish during the operation. Patients are back to normal, usually in less than a week.

The larger the kidney stone, the more considerable the pain and the danger to health. Surgery under anesthesia may be required to remove or smash the stones. The physicians may use ultrasonic or laser equipment inserted through the side of the patient. When oxalates can be fully understood, science will move a step forward to eliminating kidney stones at the source rather than having to treat them.
