Heartburn - What A Pain!

May 3, 2008
Heartburn is a problem that we don't think about until it starts to effect us. No one really pays attention to the causes, but everyone wants to sell a remedy. Most of these are over the counter, prescription medications are also available by the truckload.

The disease usually starts out as a mild burning in the upper abdomen. People seldom treat it when the symptoms are mild, but this is the very time to try to get heartburn under control. As the level of acid in the stomach increases, the burning sensation moves up the esophagus toward the back of the throat. The esophagus is protected by a thin layer of mucus, but this may break down under the assault of high levels of stomach acid. As this happens the pain becomes unbearable. Ulcerations may develop in the esophageal lining creating the need for immediate medical attention.

It is important not to let the problem develop to this stage!

Heartburn affects millions of people. People live with the pain and discomfort, despite treatment being readily available. Commonly sufferers don't understand why they are affected. But it is important to understand heartburn in order to really be able to deal with it. While we are completely inundated with advertisements for cures, many are miracle cures, they never explain the cause. What can we do to avoid the pain? How do we get heartburn?

I know advertising isn't there to provide information. Public service announcements aren't the responsibility of companies. But I think they have a responsibility to do more than just pawn merchandise without any kind of reason why we need it. Just my opinion. Chronic heartburn and GERD, without treatment, can be life threatening.

What is heartburn?

Heartburn can be caused by a hernia, obesity, or an ulcer. The disease itself is actually not in the stomach, but in the esophagus. The pain is caused by stomach acids entering the esophagus through the process of esophageal reflux, and results in a burning sensation that may be just a minor annoyance or extremely painful depending on how long you have had the disease, the amount of stomach acid involved and the current damage to the esophagus. We call it heartburn because that is the sensation that's encountered.

The condition can be caused by a poor diet, spicy food or overeating. It is extremely important to monitor your eating habits if you are prone to heartburn. You want to try to avoid medication if you can. Just watching what you, and the condition persists, it is extremely important that you see your doctor. Some of the causes of heartburn can be life threatening if not treated.

Being free from heartburn, GERD and acid reflux requires a commitment to knowing what the causes are, and avoiding the triggers. If medication becomes necessary, we will still need to observe what causes the problem in order to avoid it. Now that youn know what the reasons for heartburn are, watch your diet, and talk to doctor. Those are the steps to relieving heartburn.
