The New Endoscopic Facelift Technique

May 5, 2008
While most people have gruesome images of plastic surgery from watching the procedures on television, not all plastic surgery techniques are as bloody and gory. Some of the newer techniques available use smaller incisions and advanced instruments - which prevent blood and gore.

One of the types of surgery that is often a bit gory is the facelift. In a traditional facelift the surgeon actually has to pull skin off of the patient's face, in order to get to the tissues that are underneath the skin. These tissues must then be manipulated, all through a large incision along the patient's hairline.

More recent techniques have allowed surgeons to perform facelifts in steps - requiring less dramatic cuts, and also less scarring and recovery time. There are also different types of facelifts available these days - lifts that center on specific parts of the face and working on specific wrinkled areas.

No matter which of these facelifts is performed, you can count on one thing to still be present - blood. There will still be blood loss, and there will still be at least a bit of extensive cutting into the skin in order to reach underlying tissues. While doctors are trained for this, there are other ways.

One way to avoid the blood loss and large incisions is to perform an endoscopic facelift, which is being developed right now by several prominent surgeons. This technique will allow doctors to do mini facelifts and full facelifts through small cuts, without the larger incisions used now.

These smaller cuts allow doctors to place instruments and a camera through them so the doctor can see, and then manipulation can take place underneath the skin. All the work can be done without cutting the skin and peeling it back, so less blood loss takes place and there will be less scarring.

Unfortunately, this is less than a perfect technique right now. Not everyone can get an endoscopic facelift, and not every surgeon is a trained endoscopic surgeon - meaning that he may or may not be able to perform your facelift endoscopically. You may have to search for a doctor who can do so.

Not all endoscopic facelifts turn out perfectly either - there is a chance, as there is in any endoscopic procedure, that your doctor may have to convert to the traditional form of the facelift in the middle of the surgery. This is because doctors can't always predict what will happen before the surgery.

The endoscopic facelift is still being worked out, and it will be a while before it is considered to be working at a perfect speed. They are, right now, best for those who cannot have a regular facelift due to health reasons, such as a bleeding issue - but stay tuned, as they will become the standard, someday.
