Shrubs Are Excellent Landscaping Centerpieces

May 6, 2008
When designing a landscape, designers consider texture, light and shade, color, and placement of a variety of plants. Plush fruit trees provide instant shade and some color. A rustic stone path may provide contrast and texture when set against green ground cover. Flowers are known for their plethora of color in the garden. Shrubs, which come in a variety of shapes and colors, can create variety, texture, and shape in any landscape.

A colorful choice for a centerpiece shrub is the Burning Bush. The large bush is so named because of its eye-catching show of splendid reddish color during the fall months. Even though the bush exhibits a sensational fall show, it is also pretty during other months.

China Holly, with its evergreen leaves and red berries, can always be counted on for cheerful color contrast during the winter months. This shrub is a good choice for northern climates with a long winter.

If you're looking for year-round color, choose shrubs that bloom more than one season per year. The Purple Sand Cherry will provide color in the form of flowers in May, and purple leaves and red cherry berries in the fall and early winter months.

Shrubs are Practical Landscape Additions

Shrubs aren't just eye candy in the landscape. The versatility of shrubs makes them a practical choice. Shrubs make excellent hedges for showcasing a specific area or garden. Flowers and ground cover can be planted around the shrub to create texture and break up large lawns that require a lot of mowing. Shrubs make good fences and dividers, and can be used to camouflage the unsightly foundation of a house or other areas.

Topiaries, which are shrubs that have been clipped into a shape, are wonderful conversation pieces and an exciting addition to any landscape. With a little practice, anyone can acquire the skills to create and maintain the topiaries.

Most shrubs are not high-maintenance plants. They don't require constant watering and tending. With just a little pruning and moderate watering, most shrubs will provide years of enjoying for the homeowner.

Travelers and vacationers who spend time away from home especially appreciate high-color, but low-maintenance shrubs. Two stunningly beautiful, easy-care bushes are the classic Bougainvillea with bright red leaves, and the Mentor Barberry.

Consider the Shrub Size

Once you consider where you want to plant shrubs, you'll have no problem finding a shrub that is the right size and shape for your area. The Smooth Hydrangea grows three to five feet tall, and the Chinese Juniper can stretch up to eight feet. Shorter shrubs include the Cranberry Cotoneaster and the Dwarf Honeysuckle, which grow to about three feet. Some shrubs are bushier, while others are more contained and vertical. Shrubs can be trimmed and clipped to just about any shape and size that will accommodate your landscaping needs.

Let your imagination take over when you landscape. You can't go wrong when you incorporate interesting props and a wide variety of plants, including climbing vines, ground covers, herbs, colorful flowers and multi-seasonal bushes.
