Tips on a Personal Injury Claims Lawyer

May 8, 2008
With personal injury today, depending on the type of daily driving activity you carry out, it is worth considering starting a personal injury protection plan. Most people also have other responsibilities; those of a financial nature and family members that will need to be provided for.

A personal injury protection plan is sometimes called a PIP and it is not unusual for it to be part of a larger insurance policy cover. These insurance plans are all worthwhile but the average American family cannot always justify the additional strain on their monthly budget.

This needs to be looked at carefully to ensure it meets the family needs before it is taken out. Personal injury and property insurance are usually required by law throughout most parts of the USA, though the required amount may differ considerably in each state. This difference is highlighted by the amount of cover required by a driver in Alaska being ten times the amount required by a similar driver in Florida. Even if personal injury protection is not obligatory in your state, you may still want to consider purchasing a policy anyway.

The payouts on this are good with up to eighty percent cover for the insured and anyone that was traveling in the vehicle at the time of the accident. There are some expensive items covered by this plan, which will pay out even if the policy holder is to blame, including medical costs for the driver and people in the vehicle with him. This is a good reason why it is worth checking existing insurance plans to see if any of these areas are already protected, which should, in theory, lower any additional plan you take out. You may find for instance that any medical expenses or lost wages involved may already be covered within your existing insurance.

If you were to find that this was case then you may not require a personal injury plan at all or only a minimal cover one at worst. There are some other factors to consider though as to whether you actually need personal injury protection; one being your current driving record. Health insurance plans will often cover the main policy holder as the driver and providing the passengers are relatives, it will usually cover them as well if they are injured. Personal injury protection will still be required if you find that other passengers are not covered or the level of cover is so low it is almost a waste of time.

Every driver has a responsibility to look after the safety of the passengers they carry in the vehicle. Ensuring you have adequate personal injury protection if you are a driver should not just be about the legal requirement for you to have it, even if you are in a state that has not made it mandatory yet. How much insurance you need depends, mainly on your age, so if you are middle-aged or older, have good health and liability insurance policies, then you will probably only need minimal injury insurance. Younger, less experienced drivers often have to pay considerably more owing to their inexperience and probable meager health insurance cover but need to start looking to the future for themselves and their family by taking out as much insurance as they can afford.
