Discover What Kind of Water Damage Is Covered Under Your Policy

May 8, 2008
Do you know what all your insurance policy on your home covers? Unfortunately, too many people fall victim to this problem. They don't realize that their policy doesn't cover something that they need until a disaster happens to ruin their home and they are left searching for what their policy covers.

Living where I do, there have not been any flooding in our area to produce problems in our home, but we did have water in our basement a few months ago. Fortunately, it didn't ruin anything, so we didn't need to claim anything, but I know that it is always possible that water damage could cause some loss. If I don't have a good enough insurance policy, I will be in a deep pit.

No matter what type of water damage you may have, there are different types that are covered with insurance and types that aren't. I know that it doesn't seem right, as water should always be water, but with the insurance world, that isn't the case.

Let's take a look at a few examples of what might happen to your home with water.

Flooding is one type of water damage that is often thought of as something covered by a homeowners standard insurance policy. Unfortunately, this isn't the case. Even though you may need to replace things, or even replace your entire home, if you don't have a floater policy for flooding, you will not have any coverage at all.

The government can help you in getting flood insurance if you think you may need it. It is highly recommended for homes that are on a known flood plain. Of course the solution would be to move to an area that isn't in a flood zone, but that just isn't always necessary. Take advantage of it so you don't end up in a world of problems later.

So what happens if your son or daughter leaves the tap on in the bathroom before you leave the house, and when you get back, you have a huge watery mess? You may think that you don't have coverage for something that someone forgot to do, but you must think again. A standard homeowners insurance policy covers this.

It's pretty amazing, really, to think that they will cover for your mistakes. Just look into your insurance policy and see if this is covered. It should be, and if it isn't, you can talk to your agent to find out why.

These are just a few things that I can help you with in determining what is covered as far as water damage. Of course you should check with your own particular insurance policy and agent to be sure what all is covered, but this is a start.
