What Are Those Blood Pressure Numbers About?

May 10, 2008
Have you been curious about those two numbers in your blood pressure reading? It's amazing that doctors emphasize the importance of those numbers, while we don't have a clue as to what they mean.

Actually, these numbers tell you how hard your blood is pushing against the walls of your arteries. Just as how water building up in a hose can damage it, your own blood can also damage your arteries and leave you more susceptible to strokes and cardiac arrest.

A blood pressure reading can look like this: 120/80 mmHg. The first number represents the systolic blood pressure, which is the pressure your blood exerts on your arteries when your heart beats. The second number represents the diastolic blood pressure, which is your blood pressure when your heart rests between beats.

A blood pressure reading of 120/80 is considered normal. Majority of people have this or a slightly lower blood pressure. Those with slightly higher blood pressure than 120/80 are considered prehypertensive, and this triggers doctors to start treatment to keep the blood pressure from increasing further.

The diastolic blood pressure (the second number) has long been thought to contribute to hypertension and it's succeeding medical concerns. Recent studies, however, have shown that a higher systolic blood pressure (the first number), may also cause a measure of risk, especially if a person is past the age of 50.

When your blood pressure reading is 140/90 or higher in two different sessions, then you have hypertension. If you don't treat it immediately, then you are prone to several other medical conditions.

When it comes to bringing those numbers down, doctors often suggest life-changing, radical practices to their patients. They often ask their patients to stop smoking or drinking, start getting into a vigorous exercise program, or to change their diets drastically.

When these individuals can't maintain these life-changing practices (and more often than not, they can't), their blood pressure gets back up and their hypertension returns. In other words, hypertension can make some very unpleasant changes in a person's life.

But it doesn't have to be that way.

My hypertension program does not have any drastic practices, or vigorous exercises. In fact, you can incorporate the simple exercises into your daily life. Wouldn't you want to be one of my customers who have cured their hypertension for good?

And now that you know the meaning of those numbers, it will be much more satisfying for you when you see them go down to 120/80 levels and stay there for good.

Warm regards,
