What Dog Behavior Training Does Your New Pup Need?

May 11, 2008
If you have children the discussion about getting a puppy has no doubt cropped up time and time again. You have also no doubt discussed the responsibilities your child or children will have to assume because you know what it takes to look after a new pup.

Before you bring your new little puppy home sit down with the entire family and decide about how you want to go about instilling the right kind of behavior from the beginning. This is to avoid inconsistency in the training from the start.

Training of your new pet should start the day you bring them into your home and should continue until you have a well-trained dog.

A few basic things you will need to take care of before the new member of the family joins you will be to create a comfortable place for it to sleep and eat. Also be sure to designate an area outside for it to do its business.

Once the place for the puppy to sleep, eat and toilet has been decided and the family is in agreement on each of their roles with regard to the training of the puppy you need to decide who will be in charge of the dog. Someone has to take sole responsibility to training the right behaviors while everyone else fulfills a backup role.

Consistency is crucial to behavior training for you puppy. Simple things like always praising your dog when it does something good or reprimanding it in the same way when it does something wrong will go a long way in getting the best behavior.

There is a technique some people use to display disapproval to a new puppy and that is to 'growl' at it when it misbehaves. It does sound silly but this is how the puppy's mother would have let it know if it was in trouble. If it works for you then use it otherwise just a firm 'no!' should suffice.

For behavior training to be effective, you will need to be on alert throughout the day. There will be times you set aside possible each day to give specific training but if the dog jumps up onto the couch and its not suppose to, you can't wait until later to teach it not to.

Once you have a technique for disciplining then get everyone to use the same technique. This will speed up the effectiveness of the behavior training.

If you want to train the correct behavior into your puppy from the day it arrives in your home, then the entire family will have to learn to take responsibility, be patient and most of all love the dog enough to want what's best for it.
