Vacationing In The City Of Lights - Paris

May 13, 2008
If you are planning to visit Europe then you must stay at least a couple of days in one of its largest cities, Paris; sitting astride either side of the river Seine it is one of the world's most popular cities. Paris short stays are very popular and for good reason as it makes a superb location for a romantic weekend; you will however, discover that more time is required to fully appreciate what it has to offer.

It is famous for many famous buildings and locations; it has much to offer visitors who adore culture, even if it is only for a long weekend. Visitors to Paris as well as its citizens can travel around Paris easily; there is an excellent underground system called the Metro which runs regular trains into the city center and is very easy to understand.

At almost 1,000 feet high, the Eiffel Tower is an impressive sight; it's visible throughout most of the city but the views from the top of this huge steel structure are even more impressive. In the evening the illumination means it can be seen for many miles; taking a tour at the same time will teach you much more about this remarkable structure.

On your Paris trip ensure you add the famous Champs Elysees to your list of places to visit; it's where you will find all the top class hotels, shops and restaurants. This is considered a more exclusive and busy area of the city; the exclusive five star hotels situated in this more select part of the city might be out of most visitors' price range.

This city is also the home to the renowned Louvre Museum; it holds in excess of 300,000 pieces of art, which cannot possibly be seen in a single visit. Even on a short stay in Paris, this is a an art lovers paradise; the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo statue just two of many appreciated works of art. Paris has attracted world famous artists for hundreds of years; the likes of Monet, Picasso and many others lived in the city for years and some of their work can still be seen today.

Of course, Napoleon commissioned the construction of the Arc de Triomphe, another Paris landmark; to honor his generals (and his troops) he had their names inscribed upon it. A little known fact is that there's a viewing observatory built into the building allowing the whole area to be viewed; it is located in Place Charles de Gaulle where twelve of the city's main avenues start, including Avenue de Champs Elysees.

Obviously, these are not the only places to visit; but these should certainly not to be missed because many offer regular guided tours, some at little or no charge at all. It is fair to say that you won't see everything on a Paris short stay of two or even three day break; anything else on your 'to see' list can wait for your next trip.

And while baguette crumbs can be dusted away and wine stains fade with time, the allure of the City of Light haunts those who've made her acquaintance, hanging in the air like distant music or lingering like fog along the Seine.
