Using Natural Cork Flooring In Your Home

May 13, 2008
You may think that cork is a particularly flimsy material if you have ever had a bulletin or reminder board where you pin random scraps of paper on. However cork flooring is very different from the humble bulletin board. Indeed, cork is a very versatile and hardy material when made into flooring and can be used in a variety of rooms. This article will cover how cork flooring can be used in the home and the benefits of the material.

Cork flooring is a durable material that has excellent thermal and acoustic insulation properties. Thus it can be used in any room in the house. It has these three qualities because of the structure of cork.

The cork used to make flooring comes from the cork oak tree. This is a tree that is found in Southern Europe and regions of North Africa. The cork is actually the bark of the tree. It is peeled off the tree without any harm coming to the tree. It regrows the bark and is harvested again in another ten years. The structure of the bark has millions of tiny air pockets in it. This gives it the qualities of durability and good insulation properties.

Another feature of cork flooring is the bounce back feeling you will get when you walk on the flooring. The material will initially give when you put pressure on it but will return to it's original shape once the pressure is removed. This is a tactile sensation that other flooring will not give and may interest some people.

Cork can be used in any rooms but is particularly useful in rooms like the bathroom and kitchen, that might be heavily used. As you may be in bare feet in the bathroom, the feeling that cork gives is particularly appealing. If you are going to use cork flooring in these types of rooms it has to be sealed with an acrylic that will prevent moisture getting into the material. Moisture is not good for cork.

Other rooms that it can be used in include bedrooms, dining and lounge. In these rooms the top coat is often a wax that will protect the cork from any cracking or general wear and tear.

The texture of cork flooring makes it feel completely different from other types of flooring. The soundproofing qualities of the cork make it an ideal flooring material for densely populated living quarters like apartment building.

Corking flooring comes in a wide variety of colors. It also comes as tiling or normal floor boarding. It is easy to install and is designed like many modern types of flooring. It has a tongue and groove method of fitting one tile or board into another . It can be installed as a floating floor above the original structure or affixed to the structure or some kind of underlay.

It is pretty simple to maintain. Using a dry mop or a duster can remove most dirt on the floors surface. It does not react well to moisture so ensure that it has a top coating that will protect it from any liquids. Also avoid abrasive house cleaners that will corrode the top coating and destroy the cork.
