A Diet Tip that Violates One of the Main Rules - But It Works

May 14, 2008
After giving it much thought, I decided it is time to get serious about losing weight. This tip is one of a series I intend to write - about diet ideas that worked for me.

My new idea was simple - do it my way and ignore all the advice.

I planned to check my weight everyday at the beginning. A lot of people think against that idea since it can be discouraging if you control your weight every day and feel like your efforts on your diet is meaningless. Experts suggest to check weigh only once a week for that reason.

My problem with weighing only once a week? I don't get feedback from my efforts (or failures) fast enough.

The importance of feedback.

Experience has shown that if I engage in daily weighing the immediate feedback is critical in allowing me to assess whether the previous day's behavior was helpful or counterproductive.

Of great importance to the reliability of this feedback is to weigh yourself on a highly accurate scale at the same time each day. The best time for me is after awakening before I sit down for breakfast. My first step was to purchase a scale of the best quality. Such quality scales, with appearance very much like one encounters in a doctor's office, cost approximately $150. This expense is well worth it seeing it imparts great confidence in the results I see. I do not worry they are due to a malfunctioning scale giving varying readings from one weighing to the next.

This sense of confidence is necessary for the feedback to have its full effect. On a daily basis, with this new regimen, I am assured that if I splurge with a burger and fries from a fast food restaurant at lunch, the following day's feedback will show little, if any, lost weight. Conversely, maintaining discipline with my eating will directly result in lost pounds. Ordinarily, results are clear everyday or at least every other day.

A week is just too long for me to be able to know what I am doing right and wrong. Weighing each day lets me see the results quite quickly.

There can be difficulty with stepping on the scale each day. This is most evident when I know I have been "bad" the day before. This negative feeling, however, does serve a purpose. It reinforces my resolve to improve my eating habits that day so the next session will be more positive.

If you are finding it difficult to shed pounds, I highly recommend giving this tip a try.
