Birth Control and How it Effects Hair Loss

The FDA approved the use of the birth control pill back in the 1960's for the purpose of preventing women from becoming pregnant. Women quickly discovered it was more advantageous to prevent pregnancy by taking a pill. They also found that it regulated their periods, minimized cramping experienced during menstrual periods, and also cleared up acne on their faces.

Birth control pills have the same type of natural hormones that the body already makes; estrogen and progestin. These hormones play hold a very important role by providing balance to women's hormonal system. You should always expect some type of side effect result from the use of birth control pills.

Several different side effects have been experienced by women who have taken the birth control pill. The side effects range from mild to severe and causes several difficult problems. Hair loss is an example of just one of the several side effects that have been reported. If a family history of female pattern baldness or thinning hair does exist you may want to consider this before undertaking birth control pills.

You should talk to your doctor and find out what your options are in relation to taking birth control pills, as some birth control methods have less hormone levels in the actual dosages. Typically,your doctor will recommend that you start on a low dose birth control pill. Your doctor may even recommend a non hormonal birth control pill for those with a family history of hair loss.

It is probably best to avoid the following types of birth control if you female hair loss is a genetic trait.

-Hormone injections - Containing the hormone, progestin, these injections are meant to keep a woman from ovulating.

-Skin patches - To be worn on your body thisand it continually releases the hormones progestin and estrogen into the body at a low dose

-Implants - The implants contain progestin which can release a continual dose into the body to prevent you from ovulating.

The choice to take the birth control pill will require continuous monitoring of any hair loss just in case the need for an alternative is warranted. It is always a possibility that there may be a more effective form of birth control that doesn't allow for hair loss. Talk to your doctor about all the options available to you before choosing to utilize the birth control pill. No sign of hereditary hair loss? You then may be fine to start using the birth control pill without experiencing hair loss.
