Looking Out for Bad Breath in Toddlers

May 15, 2008
Who would have thought there would ever be a problem with bad breath in toddlers? But unfortunately some parents have noticed that children seem to have a problem in this area well before they're ready to start brushing their teeth, and definitely before it's safe for them to use mouthwash of any sort.

If this is the case, what exactly can such parents do when they find out that their toddlers have bad breath? Are any products available which are safe enough to be used by such toddlers? Prior to giving an answer to these questions, it is essential to determine the reason why these toddlers have foul breath and other things that should be looked out for.

It is important to consider a child's safety and health when considering the problem of toddlers' bad breath as you do not want to give them any products that are meant for adults. This includes mouthwashes, rinses, and things such as this.

A good proportion of these items contain various levels of alcohol, peroxide and other corrosive elements which may affect the developing system of a toddler in a rather detrimental manner. You have a larger number of effective and safer ways to address smelly breath issues in children.

Most bad breath situations are caused by the things which children eat and the decomposing food particles which still remain in their mouths and which they are unable to get rid of through flossing and brushing. Toddlers still on a bottle may have such problems due to the formula they are drinking which dries inside their mouths and giving room for bacteria to thrive.

Some foods that cause bad breath in adults, such as broccoli, cauliflower, and other vegetables can also cause bad breath in young children. These foods release enzymes and other chemicals that become a bad smell when in the air.

In order to handle the problem of bad breath in toddlers, you have to ensure that they are properly hydrated, this way their saliva will be able to clear out the ingested food particles or dried out formula. Always keep a bottle or cup of water nearby so that your baby can have some water when they want it.

Some cases of smelly breath are caused by breathing through the mouth rather than the nose; this dries the mouth and causes halitosis. You may want to have your child checked for a blockage of the sinus cavity or sinusitis, post nasal drip, or any other condition that would cause improper breathing. Your pediatrician can also perform a thorough exam and give you a personal recommendation to combat this problem.

Parents shouldn't lose hope when their children have bad breath, what they need to do is to ascertain the cause of these bad breath problems and then use the appropriate solutions to eliminate the problems. That is the safe and right way to go.
