Tagged And Identified

May 15, 2008
Dog tags and ID bracelets are gaining popularity nowadays, especially among men. Once instruments of identification, these are now fashionable items with a very useful purpose. Thus, these items set the trend in jewelry that also serves as identification. But exactly what are they and what makes them so popular?

Dog tags are so-called because of their resemblance to actual dog tags, and are actually an essential item among military personnel. Each tag is made of a stainless steel sheet where essential information such as name, rank and medical data are engraved. They usually come in pairs: one is worn in a long chain, and the other is attached by a much shorter chain to the long chain. In the event that the owner is dead or wounded, the second tag is collected for notification, and the first tag remains with the body, especially when battle conditions do not allow the casualty to be collected immediately.

During the 1970's, the so-called "military chic" appeared in youth fashion, where they wear dog tags along with their military uniforms to assert a tough image. Today, dog tags have gone a long way from there. They are now inscribed with a person's personal details such as name, address, parents' name and others, as well as a favorite quote or logo of a band or organization. There are also dog tags in gold or silver and embedded with studs.

On the other hand, ID bracelets work the same principle as with dog tags. Only then, it is intended to alert a physician, emergency personnel or police that the owner has an important medical condition even if he is unconscious or old enough to explain. It is usually a chain bracelet with a strip of metal in it.

Nowadays, the strip of metal is engraved with a name, initials or a phrase in it. There are also ID bracelets made of gold, silver or stainless steel. And not only men wear them, but also women and children as well.

So what makes dog tags and ID bracelets so popular among men?

First, the tough appeal. Since dog tags are associated with military, wearing them gives a masculine feel on the wearer. And ID bracelets are a safe choice in men's jewelry, especially that with herringbone chains.

Second, identification purposes. The essence of these items remains the same throughout time. And they still serve the purpose until now. Each tag or bracelet is personalized according to the owner's preference, so it almost becomes a part of himself.

Third, the engraving possibilities. A pair of blank dog tags or a piece of ID bracelet can be engraved with just about anything: from personal info to favorite quotes.

With that comes the fourth reason: it is also a perfect gift. These can be engraved with the recipient's name and be given as a remembrance. And because it is personalized, it adds to the personal touch of each tag or bracelet.

No wonder not only men are fascinated with these items, but also women. It only shows that anything personalized eventually becomes a part of his or her life.
