Adult Onset Acne is Gaining Popularity

May 16, 2008
While adolescence acne is what most of us think of when someone mentions acne, it is very common for adults to continue or start battling acne. It is still true that the majority of acne sufferers are teens and early adults. However, it is very common for a teen battling acne to continue the fight into and throughout adulthood. And, although less common, some adults begin getting acne for the first time in their early to mid 20's which is called adult onset acne.

Although adults are usually better equipped to handle the physical, psychological and social effects of acne, it can be just as devastating to those afflicted. And current numbers are indicating that adult acne is increasing with no known attributing reason.

Acne that lingers from the teenage years or begins during adulthood can be more difficult to deal with because of the common misconceptions about acne. For example, scarring can be more problematic and is more likely to leave permanent scars due to the age of the skin and reduced amounts of collagen. Typically, younger skin is more likely to be able to recover and heal from small to medium scarring locations.

Psychological scarring can be much harder to deal with and is often a result of the sufferers own inaction. While adults have better coping mechanisms to deal with acne, they are often less likely to seek treatment due to the embarrassment of having something that is supposed to affect teenagers not adults. While this isn't true, it is still a very common misconception among adults. This can result in a cyclical pattern of inaction followed by continued scarring and more embarrassment leading to continued inaction.

The good news is that as time goes on and more and more adults are recognizing that acne is not just for teenagers and does require treatment to eliminate it.

One of the indicators that adults are seeking relief for their acne is the purchase of prescription medications and also over-the-counter products that treat acne. Sales of these products continue to be strong and are expected to increase as awareness increases.

At the same time, adult acne is reported to be on the rise as well. Physicians and dermatologists are starting to consider the special causes and unique effects of adult acne on older patients. As public awareness and the common misconceptions are put aside, more and more adults are likely to seek medical attention for which the profession needs to be ready.

As physicians and the general population better understand acne and how to combat it's affects, more emphasis is being given to the psychological effects of adult acne. Since adults, like teens, can be influenced by what those around them think and how they think they are perceived, they often avoid attending social events that would cause them to become embarrassed. Continued understanding and research into what causes adult acne and acne in general is key to the complete treatment of the physical, social, and psychological aspects that keeps people from enjoying their lives to the fullest.
