Cold Sores - What Are They?

May 16, 2008
Have you ever experienced a painful sore or blister that appears on your mouth or lips? Do you know what causes these sores? The majority of the time the Herpes virus causes these sores, many people call them fever blisters or cold sores.

Cold sores usually start out with a small tingling sensation in the location where the sore will be. The area may start to swell slightly and blisters will begin to form. These blisters usually start out as smaller liquid-filled blisters, but many times the smaller blisters form into one large blister. Eventually the blisters will begin to ooze and the sores will crust over.

These painful symptoms usually occur close to the mouth. But, they may also spread to other areas on your face such as the nose and eyes. The virus can also spread to the genital area. If you come in contact with any cold sores you should immediately wash your hands before touching any area that may be affected by the sores.

It is important to not squeeze the sores or pick at the blisters or scabs. If you want your sores to heal quickly the best thing that you can do is to leave them alone. It is ok to apply cream to help them heal or help relieve symptoms, but be careful not to break open the scabs or blisters.

Usually the first 24 hours are key when it comes to cold sore treatments, they are most effective in the beginning so it is important that you start a cold sore remedy immediately when the symptoms start. Many doctors suggest taking action when you feel the tingling sensation even before the sore is visible, at that point you should take cold sore medication or apply the cream to the affected area. The cold sore treatments may not be effective in the later stages if you do not take immediate action when the sore first appears.

If you have contracted the Herpes virus already, know that there is no final cure-- you will carry the virus for the rest of your life. But, do not fear, because there are things that you can do to help lessen the symptoms and prevent future breakouts. Home remedies for cold sores are the best option to heal and prevent cold sores.
