Entertainment Center Furniture: Unique Designs for Conventional Ideas

May 18, 2008
Entertainment center furniture does not have to be furniture exclusively made to hold your television and accompaniments. That is the conventional method, but there are a lot of other options. Ordinary household items can be turned into entertainment center furniture. Likewise, conventional entertainment center furniture can have other uses too. If you have an imagination and some time you can create furniture from already existing items and find new uses for them. There are also some great items on the market today that combine regular furniture with entertainment centers.

If you are looking for a less conventional method for holding your electronics and such, go to a junk yard. It may take some time to find the right items, but there are is a world of great things there that can be made into entertainment centers. Take a bank of old lockers from a recently remodeled school, for example. You can remove some of the doors and cut out enough space in the middle for the television and leave the remaining locker doors around it to hold your CDs, DVDs and other items. It's not a design that is meant for everyone, but which ones ever are? This would make an excellent entertainment center in a dorm room or first apartment. It's cheap and unique - just like you!

Some furniture designers have taken the idea of entertainment centers and combined them with conventional furniture to create new designs. For example, a television that appears out of what you thought was a cedar chest at the foot of the bed. With the push of a button the bed is converted into a theater with surround sound speakers mounted into the headboard. This kind of entertainment center furniture takes care of the problem of big televisions and speakers that just don't go with the style you have decorated with. Nearly every home in America has at least one television in it, but how many of them can hide theirs with as little effort?

Traditional entertainment center furniture has not fallen by the wayside and shouldn't be expected to do so anytime soon. There are a lot of unique and novel designs, but the truth is that most people just want something their television can sit on and that holds all of their audio and visual equipment. If you have a small home or apartment, or if you are looking to furnish a bedroom, a basic TV stand will do the trick. It will have just enough space on top for the TV and enough room below to hide all of the accessories. You can even find them with slots on the sides for your DVDs and tapes.

If you have a little more space and a slightly bigger television, you may decide to get entertainment furniture pieces that join to make a whole. Often people with big screen televisions will build the entertainment system around that. It is usually the focus of the room, so there might as well be a shrine built in its honor. Whatever design you choose, remember that often less is more.
