Back Pain and High Heels

May 21, 2008
A fashionable pair of high heels is an essential part or any women's wardrobe. There are many brand names that we recognize, such as: Gucci, Steve Madden, Monolo blahnik and Christian Louboutin.

How do high heels do for a woman? High heels enhances their legs, makes their rear appear to be higher and helps to make the calves appear sleeker. High heels are a symbol of sex appeal and feminine beauty.

Orthopedic surgeons and chiropractors see high heels as one of the main causes for womens back pains. You may find yourself enslaved to have chronic back pain if you find yourself enslaved to those 4 inch stilettos.

If a women walks in her high heels all day, she will be putting her health at risk and a strain on her back. This is because an average woman walks 10,000 steps a day.

High heels do not allow weight to be distributed equally throughout the entire foot. The high heels cause the body's weight to actually be centered forward on or in the toes. This goes against gravity and nature. It causes stress on the vertebrae of the spine and it causes stress on the muscles.

When women take off their high heels, you will hear a sign of relief. Her whole body will feel as though her sense of true gravity has returned and the back pain has been relieved for now. Soon, when she puts back on her heels, the back pain will come back to haunt her. The pain will come in the form of muscle spasms, soreness and of course stiffness.

The Story of High Hell Heeled High heels were originally for both men and women to seem taller and show some form of status in high society. Men wore them to keep their feet in the stirrups and women would wear them to help increase beauty. This trend continued for many centuries.

Lifts for men have gone out of fashion for men, but the high heels have continued for women since around the 1500's. Today, high heels are associated with sex, youth and high fashion. You see the Playboy models, runway models and of course the celebrities of portraying the trend. This increases the high heel allure that is among the masses.

High heels have been causing women back pain ever since the 1500"s. This is what the high heels cause:

Bunions - Pain in back of calves and buttocks - Hip pain - Slipped discs - Calluses - Curvature of the spine - Chronic back pain - Knee osteoarthritis - Hammertoe

What research has shown the the fat heel popular in the 1980's, is no less harmful than the skinny-toed and skinny heeled stiletto so popular today. What happens is that the high heeled shoes cause increased pressure that is placed on the knees.

Podiatrists and orthopedists recommend wearing a small heel no higher than a three quarter inch. This height is better to reduce back pain even over flat heeled shoes. A small lift from your heels will support the foot, knees and back. Physicians say that high heels should come with a warning label, "Hazardous to your health!" Back pain would be reduced if they listened to the label.
