Strength of Poker Hands

May 23, 2008
The set of rules on each individual type of poker game may very a little bit from game to game. Regardless of the type of poker game being played there are a few things that should be done regardless of how they game is being played or what set of poker rules are being followed.

The first and foremost thing that anyone wanting to play poker should learn is the deck of cards that is being used. The card deck will have suits. The suits being diamonds, hearts, clubs and spades. Each of these suits will have just one each of the queen, king, jack ace, and the numbers ten through two.

After one starts to play poker a bit they will see that the main objective is similar to the majority of other card games in that the object of the game is to have the cards in your hand beat the other players cards. The major difference being that in other cards games different hands will be given different strengths and different weaknesses. Lets do a rundown of the different strengths and weaknesses of poker hands.

A Royal Flush: A royal flush is the best possible hand in poker. It cannot be beaten by anything. It consists of five cards all of the same suit and those five cards must be the ten, jack, queen, king, and ace all being held in your hand at the same time. While not impossible to get, some poker players have played their whole lives and never gotten dealt one.

Straight Flush: This hand differs from the royal in that the cards need not be in numerical order 10 through the ace. The cards do need to be five cards in sequential order and all of the same suit. This is another very strong hand, and being so it is also very hard to draw to. It is only beaten by a royal flush and of course a straight flush that is higher.

Full House: Full houses are not all that uncommon in poker. This hand has three cards of the same number and two other cards of the same number all in the same hand. This hand could look something like 3 of spades, 3 of hearts, 3 of clubs, 5 of hearts, and 5 of spades. This is one of the strongest hands in poker and can only be taken down by a higher full house, a royal flush, and of course a straight flush.

A straight: A straight consists of five sequential cards of any suit. An example of this would be the two of clubs, 3 of hearts, 4 of spades, 5 of spades, and 6 of hearts. In poker the strength of a straight is determined by the numerical value of the last of the five sequential cards.

A flush: A flush is a relatively strong poker hand. The flush consists of five cards of any numerical value that are all of the same suit. The strength of the flush is determined by the numerical value of the highest card in the flush.

Three of a kind: This hand is also referred to by poker players as trips or a set. This hand is pretty straight forward in that it consists of three cards consisting of the same numerical value.
