Maintenance And Winterisation Of Your Static Caravan

May 23, 2008
Owning a static caravan in one of the many campsites across Britain is a joy as it offers unlimited holidays in some of the greatest locations in the country. A static caravan is not purely a one off payment however; it requires a great deal of annual maintenance to ensure it remains in a good state and gives you years of unbridled holidaying pleasure. A static caravan also means consultation with the park owner to ensure both parties understand their maintenance responsibilities.

How much maintenance you will have to perform on your static caravan will ultimately depend upon how much you plan to use it. More modern static do not require as much maintenance as their older counterparts. This is mainly due to the improvement and development of materials used in construction. Fundamentally your main job will be the winterisation of the holiday home; that is preparing it so it can survive the winter without any problems occurring.

Periodically you will have to undertake a number of maintenance tasks to ensure the long life of your static caravan. Here is a brief outlay of each.

Maintaining the exterior of your static is more than just an aesthetic task, it will also prolong the life of your caravan. Clearing away any dirt or debris from the exterior walls will help to prevent mould and damp rotting the caravan. Many owners are now investing in a jet washer for this process rather scrubbing the entire holiday home by hand.

As with a normal home it is important to maintain the roof and guttering of your static. Moss will undoubtedly build up on the roof without maintenance which can result in damp. As many parks have a large number of trees, leaves can also be a problem for your guttering system, hence it is important to keep these waterways clear from debris and build-ups. Once again, damp is your main worry so ensuring that the water is dispersed efficiently will help prevent water building up.

It is important to check the anchoring of your static every now and again to ensure it is secure. You should be checking for rust and deterioration as faulting anchoring can be extremely dangerous. Consultation with your park manger should follow if you find any problems. Also, you should keep the concrete base clear as this can encourage animal life and damp, as well as reduce the circulation of air around your caravan.

Windows are often seen as the weak point of a static holiday home. It is important to regularly check seals and locks. Faulty widows can result in damp and other more expensive forms of damage.

So far we have only covered periodical maintenance tasks, there are however important tasks that must be undertaken at the end of each season. This is usually termed, winterisation.

Leaving dehumidifying crystals in the van will help keep it dry over the winter, also as part of this all water systems should be thoroughly shut off and drained to ensure that no freezing can damage pipes and fixtures. Naturally, you should give your static a good clean before you leave it for the winter, clearing all food away will also reduce the chance of any unwanted inhabitants being there on our return. Fundamentally you should also secure and lock up your caravan during the winter; thieves know that the majority of holiday homes are empty during the winter and so make prime targets for break-ins.

By following this advice you static caravan should remain in a good state providing you and your family with great holidays for many years to come.
