The Real Reasons That Postnatal Exercise Is Good For Us

May 23, 2008
Nobody wants to feel bad about themselves, especially after experiencing one of the greatest moments of their life. It's supposed to be a fabulous time in your life...so, why do so many new mothers say that have such a tough time after the birth of their child?

Why do so many experience emotional and, even, physical difficulties? Well, the reality is that your body has really gone through a very traumatic experience. Not necessarily a "bad" trauma, but a major physiological change like childbirth can wreak havoc on you, physically and emotionally. One way to offset some of the stresses associated with childbirth is to start a regular exercise routine. Postnatal exercise is a real godsend for new mothers because by making it a part of your daily life, you are helping your body to quickly heal from giving birth.

Postnatal exercise can be great for new mothers for a number of reasons. First of all, it is a perfect way for you to retrain your body to get it back into your pre-pregnancy shape. When you exercises, your metabolism will increase, which will cause your body to burn calories faster. So, to make it simple, just by exercising, you can feel like a million bucks and your body will soon start to look like it too!

You can also benefit psychologically from doing postnatal exercise. Some new moms experience a bit of depression. When you exercise, you have more energy. Part of what causes depression is when new moms feel like their new life requires too much work, and they can't keep up. By exercising, you will feel energetic and you'll be able to do a lot more. Then, because you can do more, you will have less stress and you will be able to handle the pressures of life better. Yes, postnatal exercise can do all of that!

Some postnatal exercises include leg lifts, pelvic tilts, kegel exercise, walking, swimming, and low impact aerobics. You won't have to become a fitness guru to reap the benefits. Just by making a commitment to doing them and making them a part of your daily routine, your body will feel better.

When you feel better inside, you'll look better outside, and everyone around you will notice how great you have adjusted to being a mom. They may even ask you how you do it. Share it with them if you want, or keep the "real reason" to yourself. Either way, enjoy the attention, your new baby, and your new life!
