How To Make The Most Of Your Budget For DJ Equipment

May 26, 2008
So you want to be a DJ. Finding the best equipment for your budget can be one of the most exciting parts of becoming a DJ. You need to get the best possible equipment but sadly you are not Mauro Picotto or Van Dyk and as a result do not have a limitless pool of money with which to choose the kit that you want. As a result you need to work out where your money is best spent without completely undermining the quality of the sound that you produce. So where should your money be spent and what is a reasonable budget for a new DJ to spend?

DJ equipment invariably costs more the better the piece of kit is. And sadly for most DJs there are no limits on how good and therefore expensive it gets. As a result unless you are a millionaire then you can get rid of any ideas you may have about owning the best. It is also the case that in regards to most items of DJ equipment that you get what you pay for. This means that you have to search really hard to find a special deal. So whether you are looking to get funky Morillo style this summer, play to hundreds of clubber like Tiesto or get on with some old school cheese then knowing how to make the most of your money is essential.

Music

One of the best areas in which you can spend money is the right type of music. Music is the most important aspect of any DJs kit. If you pick the right music for the right time then you are 90% on the way to achieving success. Music can be bought in a number of different formats. Maybe you are looking to use CD's, computer media files or Vinyl. Either way you need to pick your choice of music carefully and it needs to be something that you are extremely passionate about.

If you love music, and have a real taste for it, then any money you spend on it will always be an investment. After all in a few years time you might be able to pull a rare tune out of your bag to make the dance floor go crazy. Nowadays modern music formats can mixed in the same way that vinyl records can. Many DJ equipment devices enable you to mix music in the traditional way by offering electronic pads that replace the vinyl decks but can be manipulated in much the same way. This makes them a good choice for aspiring DJs that already have a large CD collection.

Playing devices

Once you have found your favourite music and invested in music in your chosen format you need to make sure that you have something to play it on. There is a vast range of playing devices available to a DJ. Most DJs will opt to use two devices. These can be used so that it is possible to listen to one and cue up and play another with no noticeable gap in play. The most typical examples of this are the turntables which vinyl DJs use to play their music. This type of DJ setup is extremely popular and is what the majority of club DJs use. Although as mentioned there are a number of devices that make it possible to manipulate CDs and computer media files in similar ways.

Headphones

Fortunately headphones are a relatively inexpensive item of DJ equipment and getting a good set is essential. In ear headphones are not adequate as they do not cut out enough ambient sound. As a result the best are those that cover the whole of the ear. This makes it easier for a DJ to hear the music they are playing and cue up a new song so that they can be mixed seamlessly.
