Home Sauna Buyer's Guide

May 27, 2008
The sauna was originally invented in Finland but has come a long way from its humble roots. Saunas are popular around the world and can be found in homes and health clubs everywhere. Today there are many different types of home saunas available for purchase. The one you choose depends on the needs of your family - as well as your specific health concerns.

A traditional sauna is referred to as a wooden finish sauna. This is a basic sauna that creates steam by splashing water on heated rocks. The rocks are heated by sitting inside a metal wood stove that has a chimney. The temperatures within an actual home sauna can reach between 70-80 degrees Celsius. The main purpose of a sauna is to cause the people sitting inside to sweat, ridding the body of impurities. The health benefits of regular sauna use are the main reasons why people are installing home saunas in record numbers. Almost any size of home can fit a small home sauna, so there's no excuse not to get one.

Infrared saunas are the modern version of the classic Finnish design. These saunas use penetrating infra-red rays to ensure that your entire body is targeted by heat. An infrared sauna is particularly good at relieving aching and painful muscles, and is overall a very good sauna experience. Most people decide to get an infrared sauna because they are just as easy to find as the traditional type of sauna - plus, infrared saunas add a whole other level to the sauna experience.

This type of home sauna makes use of a unique heater that creates infrared rays similar to those produced by the sun. The added benefit is that the rays are actually safer than the sun because they are healthy for your body, rather than being unsafe and damaging. The heater warms the air and goes down deep into the skin to get you sweating.

A portable sauna is yet another choice - this type of sauna is perfect if you plan on moving in the near future, or just want to purchase a sauna that can fit into a smaller space. Portable saunas offer you a kind of flexibility you just can't get with any other type of sauna. You should consider this type of sauna if you want to enjoy the health benefits associated with steam bathing, without the same commitment as installing a permanent home sauna.

Sauna kits are another option if you're worried about the process of setting everything up, as well as the expense. A sauna kit streamlines the installation from start to finish and saves you money because you can do it all on your own. You don't have to hire someone to put the sauna together for you, but you still get the benefits of having access to a sauna in your very own home.

Whichever option you choose, you won't regret the decision to install a sauna at home. The health and relaxation benefits will pay for the initial expense before you know it.
