How To Make Your Own Luck

May 28, 2008
How many times have you shaken your head in amazement at the 'luck' of others? From
the multiple jackpot winner to the treasure found for one dollar at a yard sale to the slight
delay that allowed one to narrowly miss an accident, we have all heard the stories, and
maybe even witnessed some. Of course, there are also those who just seem to effortlessly
succeed in everything they do, and so they are labeled as lucky. But what makes a lucky
person so fortunate? The answer is simple: they do.

Letss face it some things simply cannot be explained; whether it is called fate,
coincidence, or sheer, dumb luck, there are those among us who seem to always be in the
right place at the right time. More often than not, though, they are there not because of
fate, but because of their determination and mindset. That does not mean that you can
will yourself to win the lottery; rather, it means that you cannot win the lottery if you do
not play. You see, you can make your own luck. Consider the success stories printed in
the papers and magazines; inspirational stories of men and women who have overcome
serious obstacles to become extremely successful. Lady Luck did not pick these people
out; they picked her.

Determination is the first factor on making your own luck. First, one must decide what
exactly needs to be achieved. Suppose, for example, you wish you were wealthy. You
could wait for a windfall (perhaps there is a wildly wealthy relative you know nothing of.
Think again!), or you could go out and make it happen on your own. So, let us begin
with wanting to amass great wealth. What are some options for you? Consider what you
are good at and what you struggle with. If you have never been particularly good with
sales, then starting your own business may not be the best option. You see, you'll need to
determine what your talents are and play up to them. Denying your strong suits and
constantly pursuing avenues with which you routinely struggle can be setting yourself up
for more obstacles. That's not to say that you cannot become successful with
determination, but rather to say that your talents are yours already -- use them!

By the same token, you have to have confidence in yourself and the goal. Suppose you
are faced with a challenge you did not anticipate; are you convinced you will fail, or are
you convinced you will triumph? People who make their own luck regard setbacks or
non-results as experience, not failure. Consider Thomas Edison, who, while trying to
create the light bulb and not having much success, famously said, "I haven't failed; I've
found ten thousand ways that don't work." Had Edison not viewed the challenge in this
manner, he may never have continued, only to find that try number 10,001 worked. Was
he lucky? Yes -- by his own making.

All in all, luck is an ambiguous concept. What it means to one it may not mean to
another. Know this, though: you can make your own luck, whatever that means to you.
Recognize that there are challenges in the way of most people's goals; very few people
'happen' upon great success. It may seem effortless from the outside looking in, but
those we deem lucky and successful are often those who persevered through innumerable
obstacles to achieve their goal. With the right mindset and an inordinate amount of
confidence, you too can count yourself among the lucky.
