May 29, 2008
Have you ever noticed when two dogs get around each other, occasionally there will be issues between them? If you have, then you know that it can be a potentially dangerous and rather scary. Anytime that an animal shows an aggressive behavior, there is generally a reason behind it. Most often, it is due to respect or lack there of. It can additionally be due to the fact that someone or something has rubbed him the wrong way.

When we say that there is a reason behind your dogs behavior, it is generally due to feeling threatened by another animal or a person. Just as you would defend yourself, so will an animal. It is important for you to recognize the traits that will alert you to potential volatile behavior. Some of the most important things to look for are as follows:

* Look for the hair on the haunches raised similar to a porcupine
* If you dog starts to growl at another dog
* If they are barking and growling at each other
* If the dogs start to lunge at each other, then you need to get out of the way
* The dogs may circle each other while maintaining eye contact

All of these things are warning signs, although the signs may not give you enough time to react, you can take precautions to divert aggressive behavior. If your dog and you have a terrific relationship and you understand each other, then your voice can assist in diverting the situation. You will need to use a firm commanding voice and direct your dog to stand down. If your dog truly respects you, then he will fit the aggressive urge and listen to your commands. This will be difficult for him as he was attempting to portray his dominance and the fact that he is the alpha dog in the scenario.

It is important for you to understand, that just as you have self esteem, so does your dog. It is important to him that he has your approval and love. It is additionally important that he feels that he is the master of his domain and the protector. If he feels that this is threatened or that he does not have your approval, then you will have a sad and sullen dog on your hands. This is similar as to if the dog has been abused in the past.

If the dog has experienced abuse in the past, then it is possible that he will show aggressive and dominant behaviors towards other animals. Chances are that this may become a regular pattern. You can break this feeling for your dog by showing him additional love and respect. The more comfortable that he feels, then there is the increased likelihood that his esteem will increase allowing for less need to express the dominance that was prevalent previously. Any animal as well as person will lash out if they feel that they are threatened in any way. This can be through invasion to your space or bodily harm. Understand that as you will fight back, so will your dog. But, if your dog has started showing aggressive tendencies to you or other animals, then it will do nothing but get worse. Seek help immediately.
