The Rich Poor Divide As Strong As Ever

May 29, 2008
It seems there truly is a divide of rich and poor these days. On the one hand, we have those who cannot afford the roof over their heads and on the other we have the people who are still in the realms of being able to afford extortionate luxury gifts. And we're not talking fancy spa days here. We're talking hugely expensive designer jewellery.

Count Carlo Felice Trossi of Italy, once president of Ferrari and Grand Prix winner was once the proud owner of a large, gold Patek Philippe watch. The unique Trossi Leggenda that has recently been sold at Sotheby's in Geneva for a record 1.1 pounds million - a staggering 200,000 pounds more than expected. So, it would seem, there are still some people with enough disposable income for luxury gifts.

This price tag makes it the most expensive watch ever. Maybe that's because it comes with the prestigious provenance of being owned by such a revered person. Trossi raced speed boats and racing cars as well as being a pilot in the days when the idea of planes was just taking off, so to speak.

It is quite understandable that this would be considered the ultimate luxury gift as Patek Philippe was a luxury watch maker and Ferrari are a luxury car manufacturer so being the owner of this watch would speak volumes about the wearer. I have to say with a price tag of 1.1 pounds million, I think I would be too scared to wear it anywhere other than in a bank vault.

Before this the record breaker was a Rolex made in 1980 which was named after the American actor, Paul Newman, and named the Oyster Daytona. This was estimated to fetch a sale price of up to 40,000 pounds but actually exceeded this to reach 76,000 pounds.

It would seem there are a certain class of people that can afford these luxury gifts and they will stop at nothing to get them. When most of us are looking at the price of houses, these people are spending the same amounts of money on timepieces. So what is the fascination for a luxury gift that could command such a price?

Time is the one thing that man has no control over. Strive as he might, there is never enough of it. It never goes at the speed we want it to and there is nothing we can do about it. Machines have been invented to make life easier, to speed up everything from the mundane household chores to the luxuries and sports and leisure equipment. With what result? With the result that we spend all our time trying to cram even more in to our lives.

These new inventions have not helped us gain more time, not one iota. More pressure is put on us every day and we spend all our time racing from one event to the next. We are a generation of clock watchers and it's not because they look so pretty.

Every nation in the world has some scheme or another on the go at any one time in an effort to create a time machine. This would be the ultimate way of controlling time and events that, in reality, would cause utter chaos and confusion in the world. But if they succeeded, what would they do with it? Simply go back and cram more stuff in, in an effort to create more spare time in the future.

Until then, people will have to be content with enjoying their luxury watches and watching time move along in that unending way that it has.
