The Secret Is Out, Sexy Lingerie Now Daily Wear

Jun 2, 2008
The Sexual Revolution of the 1960s has influenced more than just dating. Previously, womens undergarments went from unmentionable to sexy lingerie as women no longer accepted the discomfort of 19th century designs. The evolution of brassieres, panties and night wear went from embarrassing grandma wear to such sensual heights that now allow women to either expose or feature their lingerie as outerwear.

Prior to middle 20th century, linen and cotton were often the only options for womens undergarments. However, with the increased commercial availability of lycra, nylon, polyester, and other fabrics such as lace, manufacturers and designers found hidden demand for more sensual and appealing products.

Adding fuel to the fire of outerwear lingerie was a company named Victorias Secret. In addition to a catalog business, in 1977 owner Roy Raymond introduced a store concept that eliminated the stigma of men purchasing lingerie for their girlfriend or wife behind sectioned off areas. No more were racks and racks of bras, panties in every size littered all over the store. Instead, Raymond featured one pair mounted on the wall in a frame then staff could assist the customer in finding the correct size after deciding on the model desired.

From there, magazines such as Mirabella in 1995, along with modern movies and celebrity models, helped bring lingerie inspired outerwear to the forefront. The first convertible piece, the camisole, was quickly adapted to be worn in place of a tank top and gives the allure of both being the top half of a dress, without the bottom. When paired with jeans, this provocative piece is sleeveless and tight fitting, yet provides acceptable coverage even when worn out in public.

Rock stars of the 70s & 80 have long worn everything from corsets, bodice and just about anything with laces as contrast to their often aggressive style. The shock value of men wearing clothing traditionally worn by women is not unique, but certainly from public standards, provides at least a conversation piece. That being said, women wearing body shaping clothing on the outside instead hidden under other layers presents the impression that were seeing something we should not.

Taboo as it may seem, seeing ones underwear may actually be part of the purpose of purchase as spending $100 or more, yet not allowing anyone outside the boudoir seems more of a crime. Called whale tail, an affectionate expression for the visual one gets when seeing thong underwear exposed over the waistline of a womans pants or skirt. And with the help of low rise or hip hugger jeans, this is becoming more commonplace than not.
