Taking Care Of Your Clay Poker Chips

Jun 6, 2008
It is true clay poker chips are more costly and demand more work, but they still remain the number one choice among poker enthusiasts. Part of their allure is the fact that they look and feel like professional chips used by the casinos. The poker extremists feel that they absolutely must have them. There is nothing quite like the clatter of authentic clay chips.

You should bear in mind that clay chips are not always easy to care for. In fact you will need to look after them well to keep them looking good. If you do not do this in as little as 2 short years your clay chips will be worthless. On the other hand when you look after your chips well they will last 5-6 years. To insure this you will need to clean and oil them carefully.

How often you clean your chips depends on how often you have your home poker game as well as how many beers your friends spill on your chips. Clay poker chips are extremely porous and tend to soak up whatever it touches. Over time, your chips will become stained with a mixture of pizza sauce, soda, and beer. Your only recourse is to clean each chip individually.

When you play poker on a weekly basis you will find that your chips will need to be cleaned every 2-3 months. Get a container of mild soap and warm water, a soft toothbrush and a cotton cloth for drying.

First, dip the toothbrush in the water and shake of the excess. Now slowly scrub your poker chips one at a time making sure you don't get the label wet. When you're done, lay each chip out to dry. Generally I'll lay my chips out overnight.

When the chips are dry you will need to rub them lightly with some oil. This will stop them from getting stained with food and beverages. It will also help to stop your chips from getting worn down.

Get some mineral oil from your local store and put a couple drops on your finger tips. Now rub down your chips individually until you feel like you need some more oil. Then apply a couple more drops to your fingers and keep on going. When you're done, place the chips out to dry overnight once again.

It's a long and grueling process, but taking proper care of your clay poker chips will ensure that you can enjoy them for as long as possible.
