Some Tips on Maintaining and Replacing Tanning Bed Parts

Aug 17, 2007
Having a sunbed at home might be very convenient, but there is more to using a home sunbed than just lying under the plexiglass and absorbing the UV rays to get a tan. Owners actually need to regularly maintain and even replace tanning bed parts to ensure that the equipment runs smoothly. Proper maintenance of sunbeds' various parts also helps in extending the lives of these indoor tanning devices.

For salon owners, making sure that sunbeds are operating at the highest level is a crucial part of the profit-making process. Monitoring the different tanning bed parts is part of these businesses' day-to-day operations. The maintenance of equipment in tanning salons is done regularly not only to make sure that the devices are in perfect order, but also to comply with laws governing the indoor tanning industry. In places where the business of indoor tanning is regulated, inspections by authorities are common and salons are required to follow the guidelines of operation and equipment maintenance set by administrative offices.

Each part of a tanning bed performs a particular function and is governed by specific sets of laws. In some states of the US, for example, the kind of lamp that should be used in tanning beds is controlled by authorities. There are areas in the country where salon operators are not allowed to use a different brand of lamp for a particular manufacturer's sunbed. The rules were enacted to make sure that users of sunbeds don't suffer from burns and other accidents that can happen if they overexpose themselves to the UV rays emitted by these devices.

Among the different sunbed parts, lamps are the ones that need constant attention and monitoring. Each type of sunbed is fitted with a different kind of bulb that should be compatible with the sunbed model and the ballasts and wattage power. The right time to replace a bulb depends mainly on its wattage.

Another important part of sunbeds is the buck booster. This device regulates the electric power and voltage of the tanning bed. Proper maintenance of buck boosters keeps the sunbed operating safely and effectively. Aside from buck boosters and lamps, other parts that need to be kept in good order are capacitors, facial glasses, sockets, timers, goggle tanks and receptacles. There are also extra parts that commonly comprise a tanning bed. These include bed sanitizers, pillows, cooling fans, warning signs and paper products.

To make sure that tanning bed parts are all in order, users must follow the instructions in the manufacturer's manual. If one of these parts is in need of replacement, substitute parts can be bought from sunbed manufacturers and other electronic stores. Owners can also opt to have their sunbeds serviced for part replacements if they don't want to do it themselves or are not as knowledgeable about the process as they should be. The important thing, though, is to monitor the device constantly to avoid any accident and maintain its performance level.
