3 Low Cost Ways to Market Your Own Bath and Body Products

Jun 6, 2008
The literal meaning of the word spa actually means "health by water" in Latin. While there are many spas out there that offer hydrotherapy, they also offer other treatments as well, such as facials, manicures, massages, pedicures, hair styling, and even skin treatments.

It is a growing industry that generates $11 billion per year and according to the International Spa Association there were 136 million visits to spas in 2007 in the U.S. alone. That makes it the fourth largest leisure trade in the United States and with the continued attention that the spa industry gets in movies, television, commercials and advertising it is set to grow.

If you want to makes some money in this business, you may want to purchase a day spa, start your own spa, or even start manufacturing some spa products yourself, such as body scrubs, lotions, balms for exfoliating, bath salts and so on.

A number of handbooks and manuals, such as "The Handcrafter's Companion" can aid you in making your own spa products. Some recipes are even available on the Internet for you to try, like this one for salt scrub:

If you had to pay full price for a good jar of salt scrub, you'd be spending at least $20. However, you can make it in your own home easily. Just combine about a half cup of sweet almond oil, a handful of sea salts, and then add your favorite essential oils. You'll be ready to have your spa experience right at home.

You can similarly find very effective and reasonably-priced recipes for footbaths, hand treatments, facials and even shampoo online. You will find that many people who have worked in some of the world's most famous day and destination spas post recipes on the Internet. This assures you of the reliability and efficacy of the products.

Once you come up with the products you want to make and sell, then you'll need to work on the marketing side. Using the word "spa" is often very effective. It can help you add to the price of your product, since many people are ready to purchase just about anything that has the word "spa" on it.

When packaging your products you want to keep your cost low and at the same time have something that is pleasing to the eye. You may consider using some simple plastic or cellophane packaging with professionally printed tags and labels that you can easily customize.

Having a spa party at your home is a great way to market your new spa products as well. Let everyone try a bit of one of your new products that you have created. You'll need to set up the area in a way that it feels just like a spa for the best effect.

Have some nice signs that provide them with great tips. Include tips on how lavender can provide healing, how they can get rid of dry skin, and how beneficial it is to detox the skin. Use some soft music or even a water fountain to add some effect as well.

Now that you have the stage all set, you can have a great spa party that everyone will love. You can take the time to do facials for your guests or even manicures to help introduce the products that you want to sell. You'll also be able to get great feedback from the friends who attend.
