Crack Open an Egg for Your Health

Jun 7, 2008
Reading the headlines these days, you might just be confused about whether or not eggs should be a part of your healthy diet. One day you'll read that you shouldn't have more than two eggs every week, the next day another expert is proclaiming that there's nothing wrong with two eggs a day.

According to the nutritional guides, eggs provide protein for your diet. Eggs are also great for people looking to lose weight. Proteins last longer in your system, so they quell your hunger longer than carbohydrates do. Scientific research, conducted at the Rochester Center for Obesity in Michigan, has shown that eating eggs for breakfast can significantly reduce the amount of food you eat during the rest of the day by up to 400 calories.

There are some other benefits to eating eggs that most people aren't aware of. For instance, egg yolks are full of an antioxidant called lutein. Lutein is believed to promote your eyesight health. It forms a shield for the retina by blocking damaging light rays; thus, it works by blocking inflammation of the macular pigment.

Want to boost your brainpower a bit? Eggs can even help your memory since a single egg yolk delivers 300 mcg of choline. Choline is one of the most powerful components of acetylcholine, which has been proven to provide flexibility to neurons in the brain that keep your memory intact. By ingesting a single egg, you've helped your neurons accept, process, and store information more quickly and efficiently.

Eggs can even help prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs). Peptides, a protein found in the whites of eggs, bind to the infectious E. coli bacteria and inhibit them from attaching to the walls of the urinary tract. This is excellent news for those who suffer from this painful condition on a regular basis.

When you hear that eggs (or any other food) are bad for you, find out where the information is coming from, and pay close attention to the facts. While you might have heard that eggs promote heart disease, one study done by the Harvard School of Public Health was unable to find a link between eating them and developing this problem. In fact, some studies have shown that eggs can help prevent heart attacks and strokes.

There is no doubt that your cholesterol can rise because of your saturated fat intake. However, eggs only have 1.5 grams of saturated fat. In the same token, eggs contain 5 grams of the "right" kind of fat your body needs. In addition to being part of a healthy diet, eating eggs can improve the way you look from a beauty standpoint, as well. Eggs are full of sulpher, vitamins, and minerals that help you grow gorgeous locks and fabulous nails.
