Does Your Dog Have Selective Hearing, Or Are They just Ignorant?

Jun 9, 2008
A dog is supposed to be man's best friend, so its easy to see why it is so frustrating when your dog ignores what you say!

When a dog refuses to listen and won't respond to their commands it can puzzle the dog owner. There is no magic formula to getting your dog to listen to you and obey your commands. However with a little bit of consideration for your dog and their needs this is a problem that can be very easily solved.

First, think about the command that you are giving your dog. One of the times that owners find their dogs ignoring them is when they are trying to get their dog to come or heel. Think about what you are doing when you call your dog to you.

How are you acting, and what emotions are you showing for your dog to pick up on? If you are angry or displeased, there is no reason that your dog will want to come near you, so remember that you should never call your dog to you for a reprimand.

In the mind of your dog, he thinks that he is being told off for coming to you when you used the "come" command. That is one way to ensure that you dog will ignore that command next time. Remember to use the command is a calm and inviting way. Use open arms and a smile to ensure that your dog will be happy to come to you when you ask them to.

Think about what you do if your dog does not come. Will you walk after him, frowning and reprimand him further? This tends to confuse your dog. It will stress him out because he might be unsure of what the command really means.

Your dog might even decide that the command to "come" is one that will only bring them discomfort. So it may be the case that you will be able to train them to come even in these circumstances, however in the long run your dog will have serious problems.

Consistency is the key. For dog owners commands such as "Come" and "Here" are one and the same. However, for a dog there are very few commands that they will remember so it is much easier to train them on one word per command.

Using an inviting tone remember to use the same word every time you ask your dog of something. It can be frustrating for many dog owners if their dog doesn't respond to a command first time round and this leads to the situation as described above. So make sure that your dog wants to obey you when using any command.

In some cases, the dog ignoring is something of a dominance issue; this is particularly common with very smart or stubborn breeds. Remember that for some breeds that constant training is required throughout their lives, so you may try to do some more obedience training.

This can help reassert your dominance as well as remind them of common commands Having your dog ignore can be frustrating or even hazardous, so take some time to correct this behavior immediately!
