Top 3 Mistakes You Make During a Breakup

Jun 9, 2008
There are a lot of things that can go wrong when you are fresh out of a breakup and desperate to get your life back on track. Most of these harmful behaviors can be fixed or balanced out if you can just identify them and stop them immediately. Once you get out of your own way, the path to recovery can be very simple. Here are a few of the mistakes you could be making right now.

1) Drunken Dialing - Its late at night, you have had a few drinks, and the loneliness you are feeling is unbearable. You know its a bad idea, but you just cannot help it...you HAVE to call your ex, just to hear his voice.

This is all too common among newly broken-up couples, when the loneliness is at its worst. There are worse things you can do, but this really doesnt help your case any. If your ex even picks up that late, he finds himself talking to a lovesick and incoherent person whom he can barely understand...it doesnt paint a good picture of you, and neither does the alternative: a 10 minute long rambling voicemail message. Try to avoid this if at all possible.

2) Text-Message Terrorism - The coined name for this may sound a little dramatic, but so is the act itself. This is when (often fresh out the breakup and fresh into Panic Mode), you freak out and bomb your ex with message after message trying to stay in his thoughts and convince him to take you back.

It is really easy to fall into this. Even if it doesnt seem like something you would do, being in such a turmoil can make you very desperate...desperate enough to practically harass your ex with constant calls. This will only alienate you and your ex, and drive him to be so tired of you that he avoids you entirely...which makes getting him back significantly harder.

3) The Endless Slump - You are so depressed that life just stops having any meaning, and so you completely stop living it. You stop going out, whether its to work or to class, and certainly not with friends. You sit at home at all hours of the day, sleeping half the time and sobbing over daytime television the other half. Life just starts to pass you by as you refuse to keep on living it.

Perhaps the most destructive of the behaviors I cover in this article, the Slump does more than just ruin your chances at getting your ex back, it literally ruins your life. You can lose everything to this: your friends, your relatives, your job, even your health! It is crucially important that you break out of this as soon as it starts. Feeling depressed over a breakup is natural, but letting it take over your life is unacceptable. Life needs to go on.

These are only three of the issues you may face, but it is very important that you try to avoid them at all costs. It is okay if you have already fell to one or all of them, but the time is now to stop letting these behaviors harm you. If you can rid yourself of these problems and develop a complete and well thought-out plan, you will soon discover just how easy it can be to get your ex back and get your life back on track.
