Pet Poodle Facts

Jun 10, 2008
Thinking of owning a pet? Poodles are best for you because they are one of the most wonderful pets. Aside from their excellent and distinguishable features, they are among the most intelligent breeds. They are usually small but you may be surprised to know that there are 3 different sizes. Here are some poodle facts you might find interesting:

The American Kennel Club sanctions three varieties of Poodles. The largest is the Standard, which reaches over 15 inches at the top of the shoulders. The Miniature is next in size and fully-grown will reach 10 inches at the top of the shoulders. The smallest is the Toy Poodle, who will weigh in at 6 to 8 pounds and be under 10 inches at the shoulder.

But there are even smaller than Toy Poodles, the Tiny Toy and Teacup Poodles. These two varieties are becoming popular pets although their size variation is not recognized by the AKC. The Tiny Toy only weighs about 4 to 6 pounds while the Teacup is the lightest that only weighs 2 to 4 pounds.

One of the most important benefits of owning a poodle is that they don't shed and are hypoallergenic, which makes them the perfect pet for those with allergies. Another one of the interesting Poodle facts is that they don't have the strong odor often associated with other breeds.

Poodles are one of the oldest breeds of dogs, and we know this from carvings on Greek and Roman coins that resemble the breed. The AKC recognized Poodles in 1890 and they were the most popular breed of dog in America by the 1960's.

Poodles were popular in France, Russia and Germany since the 1500's - the French like the so much that they made the Poodle their national dog! They are well known for their excellent hunting skills, especially in water retreiving, in fact the name Poodle comes from the German Pudel which is short for Pudelhund meaning "splashing dog". Of the three different types of poodles, the standard is the oldest.

Poodles can have a variety of hair types. It can be coarse and wiry to soft and wavy. There are also a variety of hair cuts that a Poodle can be be given. I am sure you are familiar with the classic show clip, but there is also the pet clip, the puppy clip, the English saddle clip, and the continental clip. Some poodles also have their coat corded.

Poodles are very intelligent dogs. They are a versatile breed that can be trained easily to many activities such as hunting, as well as being easy to house break. Poodles love people and are a very active breed that needs lots of stimulation and exercise.

A healthy poodle will tend to have a long lifespan. Typically a toy will live to 17 years while a miniature will live about 14 years and a standard poodle will go about 11 1/2 years.
