Garmin Quest 2: is it worth the money?

Jun 11, 2008
There are a lot of products on the GPS market today. A few of the portable GPS devices, such as the Magellan RoadMate 800, assert they can be used in the car and on foot. However, although they may be small enough, their strange shapes make them far from being ideal walking buddies.

But there is one exception - the Garmin Quest 2. This PDA-like appearance makes it a wonderful travel cohort. It doesn't matter if you're driving or walking. Maps are now stored on the apparatus, one of several nice upgrades over its forerunner.

With precise directions, the Garmin Quest 2 is a reliable, flexible and portable GPS device. It is built solidly, making it hard to damage, but is also comfortable when you are using it in your hand.

Each Garmin Quest 2 comes with instructions and a USB cable. The USB port is found on the back with a rubber cover and there is also an external antenna attachment. While the Quest 2 is a portable GPS device, its doesn't have its own carry pouch. Also, you cannot use the USB port to charge the device.

The biggest development the Garmin Quest 2 has since it predecessor is pre-stored maps of North America, as well as Puerto Rico, so you don't have to shift maps from your PC. Just charge it and you're ready to go! You can course to your destination by address, intersection, or saved locations.

The Find New feature of the Garmin Quest 2 mean that you can find points of interest along the way when traveling to your destination. Points of interest are things such as hotels, gas stations or food outlets. The Quest 2 learns the route that you take and can remember them for later. It can also calculate the fastest time or shortest distance to your chosen destination.

The Garmin Quest 2 allows you to avoid specific roads, like a certain highway or toll road. It will also accommodate detours or recalculate your route if you veer off course, run into a construction zone or come to a dead end. The TracBack feature allows you to retrace your steps or route - a bit like a Hansel and Gretel Trail - and allows you to keep track of where you have been.

Its minuscule size does have some disadvantages however. You can only get voice guided instructions with the built-in automobile mount. The display screen is small and doesn't come with the touch screen feature. It is also a little pricey, with the Quest 2 retailing for $750.
