Confronting Alcohol Abuse

Jun 12, 2008
The overuse or abuse of alcohol (alcoholism) or other drugs is called substance abuse. It is common and costly. It can cause or worsen many medical problems and destroy families and lives. Alcohol abuse causes over 100,000 deaths in the United States and Canada each year.

Alcohol is on top of the list of drugs most abused by kids between the ages of 12 and 17, in other words minors. The most common cause of death in teenagers are motor accidents due to excessive alcohol, although other resulting behavior patterns include high-risk sexual habits, getting poor grades or low job performance, the use of tobacco products and experimenting with illegal drugs.

Alcohol and drug use may be an unconscious attempt at self-treatment for another problem, such as depression. You have an alcohol problem if your use of alcohol interferes with your health or daily living. You develop alcoholism if you physically or emotionally depend on alcohol to get you through your day.

If we try and define the actual drinking habits of somebody who abuses alcohol, we can't. This condition caters for those who drink daily as well as those who just like to go over the top at weekends. One thing they all have in common though is that they don't like working on Mondays or on Fridays as alcohol abuse side effects start to kick in.

On the other hand though there are those who do manage to give up for long stints, but 9 times out of ten they will fall back into their bad habits and start off binge drinking in an attempt to make up for lost time. The problem of withdrawal symptoms will also have to be tackled as trembling, delusions, hallucinations, and sweating are very common symptoms, but for really bad cases that try and stop from one day to the next will also suffer from cold turkey. You really do need medical support if you want to stop and you may even need a medical detoxification.

When somebody actually decides to challenge an alcoholic it is never straight forward. One good bit of advice though is to handle the situation whilst he or she are sober and not under the influence of alcohol.

Confronting an alcoholic is sometimes called an intervention and must be carefully planned according to recommended expert guidelines, preferably those issued by a knowledgeable organization like Al-Anon which is the support group for family members of alcoholics.

Also, prior to confronting an alcoholic, you should check with the person's doctor or a specialist in treating alcoholic disorders to determine how to prepare yourself and any others who might be helping you to confront a drinker about whom you are concerned. We have listed nine tips that may be helpful in preparing for an intervention at the stopdrinking.org blog which will be a great place to start.
